Some of us have noticed on older (1950-70s) mono soundtrack tapes that the Left channel is somewhat bass, Right channel more treble. It seems intentional. Were they suppose to be mixed down together for the final film version?

Also, for whatever reasons, some channels get muffled spots and the volume drops become annoying. Trying to fix this by boosting the volume doesnt always work right or compensate for the muffled tone. Using the other channel to mask it (assuming it isnt also muffled) also creates an issue since it will contrast with the rest of the tape (the separate bass/treble sound). Any suggestions on fixing this?
