I think Rolfe Kent was more blindsided.
He's the relatively new and accomplished musical voice...

Am I the only one who was blindsided by Andrea Guerra's lovely score for The Pursuit of Happyness? Sentimental without being treacly, providing just the right amount of non-nauseating uplift, hope and quiet desperation during the film's key passages. Difficult to believe that this is the same man responsible for the vomitous "Million Voices" from Hotel Rwanda, but now I'm intrigued and quite frankly excited to hear a relatively new and accomplished musical voice enter the fray. |

Interesting. I largely appreciate Rolfe Kent, but I hated the wildly overpraised About Schmidt, so I'm not surprised that the score didn't register. Perhaps Guerra's allegedly cribbed composition simply works better in a straightforward drama than it did in Payne and Taylor's winky and tiresome skewering of the middle class. (Sometimes trenchant counterpoint simply falls flat.) Whatever the case, and with apologies to the ostensibly maligned Kent, I'll still buy Happyness. |
