Let’s hear it for George Anthiel’s THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION. This is one of my all-time favourite scores but how come no-one ever comments on it. The score has everything which a historical epic made in the ‘fifties should have; a dramatic rhythmic main theme, a wonderfully melodic love theme music, religiose chorals and a superbly climactic Bolero. Antheil composed about twenty film scores but this was the only one issued on disc. Unfortunately it was only issued in mono although I would have thought that the music was recorded in stereo in 1957. I’d love to have a new modern re-recording of the complete score. Hopefully there are others who appreciate this score as well. And before anyone starts criticising the film – don’t start! I think the film is great, especially when it contains such stars as Cary Grant, Sophia Loren (never more lovely) and Frank Sinatra. All people ever say is how miscast Sinatra is. Why? I’m sure it’s just because people don’t expect to see Sinatra in a character part. . |
