In 1984, King Conan returned to the big screen in Conan The Destroyer, the more family-friendly PG-rated sequel to the 1982 R-rated affair of Conan the Barbarian. It was a sequel that film critic Roger Ebert said was "sillier, funnier, and more entertaining" that its predecessor. Back for the second film adventure with Conan was composer Basil Poledouris, composing a score rooted in the ideas and themes from the first film, along with a host of new themes. Poledouris originally planned to simply adapt his score for this first film, but after seeing the tone and plot of the new film he realized he needed to deconstruct the original and build an all-new score around it. In turn the result is a lighter, more adventurous, but no less thundering score for a movie less about a revenge and more a Dungeons & Dragons-style quest.

For this release, licensed with the generous cooperation of Universal Music Enterprises and Universal Studios, Intrada was given access to the three-channel stereo scoring session masters. At the time of the film's theatrical run, a 30-minute album of highlights was released on MCA Records. This new Intrada album features the complete score release, doubling the running time of that original MCA album to 60 minutes. It features a wealth of new material, including the premiere of the film's "Main Title," which contains the only time the new Conan theme is fully developed, as well as highlights like "Zula-Bombaata Fight" and the beautifully reflective "Ice Palace." The music is performed by the Union Musicisti Di Roma in a very crisp and detailed recording that makes it sound like the musicians are right in the room with you. Also featured is a striking new cover designed by Stéphane Coedel.

In the film, Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is still mourning the loss of Valeria, but his reputation as King of Thieves gets him sucked (or suckered) into a nefarious plot to shroud the world in evil. The Scrolls of Skelos foretell that the virginal Princess Jehnna (Olivia d’Abo) must undertake a quest to retrieve the sacred Horn of Dagoth, and Queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas) promises that if Conan will aid the princess, the queen will restore Valeria to life. They will be accompanied on their journey by the queen’s champion, Bombaata (Wilt Chamberlain), who has secret orders to kill Conan once the prize is secure. The company acquires additional traveling companions in the wizard Akiro (Mako) and the fearsome warrior-thief Zula (Grace Jones). They face a series of obstacles, including feral cannibals, mad cultists and the sorcerer Toth-Amon in his crystalline palace, before returning to confront Tamaris and the reborn Dagoth— an unsettling monster that will turn the world into darkness.

Got it. Very listenable and then some, a stark departure if one only heard the somewhat lackluster “Main Title” performance and judged everything else from that.

To this day, I get so mesmerized by "Chamber of Mirrors" that it's almost as if I'm hearing it for the first time. One of the best cues ever written for any medium, and one cue that I feel the re-recording did not give utmost respect. It is sooooo Basil and it is sooooo damn good!

Received my copy last night. Will take some much needed time off this weekend to listen to this classic.

Just having a Christmas morning listen to this music, which happily arrived on the 22nd! Enjoying it through my headphones makes experiencing this original recording quite a revelation! The power, energy and the details really come through in this gorgeous mastering! Thank you!
