This Kickstarter went live yesterday, and in just over 24 hours it is already almost 59% funded! The bottom tier, to get a lossless digital single of the complete 8 minute score, is only £3 (less than $4 USD), and every note of this music is PURE GOLD, so even casual Goldsmith fans have little reason not to go for this:

Oh...and if there are any "CD only" folks here, I did talk Leigh into committing to a CD edition stretch goal, should at least four scores be funded (either through stretch goals or sequel campaigns) in this ongoing project to record early Goldsmith TV scores. (Obviously a CD edition doesn't make much sense if the CD is only 8 minutes long, but once you approach half an hour of music it makes perfect sense.)

Last night, after less than four days had passed since the start of the campaign, GOAL WAS REACHED!

Significantly, at the end of this 8 minute PSA, we feature Leigh's mock-up of a cue from the 1959 GE Theater episode, "Sarah's Laughter", for which Goldsmith wrote a lovely Americana score. This is what he plans to launch a stretch goal for on Monday, so give it a listen if you're curious. Not only is the original music recording apparently lost, but the episode itself is lost, too! This is a case where Leigh would not be reconstructing the score by ear (as he is doing with "The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky") -- instead, The Goldsmith Odyssey managed to locate the original written scores in Goldsmith's own hand! Hence why we have a mock-up instead of original music sample from the episode. But the potential to record Goldsmith music that otherwise no one could even hear at all is particularly thrilling!

As promised, Leigh made the stretch goal for the lovely Americana score "Sarah's Laughter" LIVE today on Kickstarter!

He writes,
"As promised, and seeing that we've over 20 days left on this project, it's worth running this modest Stretch Goal to try and turn a 2-hr session into a 4-hr session, and to record two scores instead of just one!! From a logistic (and financial) perspective, the beautiful "Sarah's Laughter" is the most convenient episode to capture on this occasion, as the required players will already be in attendance. A rough demo of one cue from this score can be sampled over at The Goldsmith Odyssey Podcast (it's very likely that this is the first time the music has been heard since 1960!)

Including this particular score in our recording session will bring the project total to £3600. However, as we've already hit the £3050 point(!), this leaves us just £550 to raise before May 25.

"Add-on" buttons have been activated at each tier and these can be used to select the new "Sarah's Laughter" option; of course, you can simply revise your initial contribution by £3 (or more, if you feel like pushing the project further toward its goal). Kickstarter's way of revising pledges this is somewhat counter-intuitive, so our pal from The Goldsmith Odyssey, W. David Lichty, has created this nifty how to graphic to illustrate the steps you need to take:

I also just confirmed with Leigh that the additional £3 alone will extend EACH tier's perks to include BOTH scores! That is, if you go for the £50 tier which gets you an Associate Producer credit and a copy of the complete musical score in PDF format... for £53 instead you get copies of BOTH complete scores in PDF format, plus the Associate Producer credit on both! Same goes for the top tier of £100... £100 gets you access to the recording session for "The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky" but £103 gets you access to the recording session for BOTH "The Bar Mitzvah of Major Orlovsky" AND "Sarah's Laughter"! It's practically Buy One Get One Free at that point...

So those of you who were at Tier 1, you can just straightforwardly double your contribution to basically get twice as much music... or you might want to consider going up to a higher tier if you care about the accompanying perks, because if the "Sarah's Laughter" stretch goal is successful (and it certainly looks like it will be), you are getting a shockingly good bargain (since you don't have to double your giving amount at those tiers in order to get double the perks).

(Hope I didn't explain that in too confusing a fashion.)

For anyone who's still somehow on the fence about supporting this (for so little money!), Leigh has just provided a third and final enticing sample of the "Sarah's Laughter" score, music Jerry Goldsmith wrote for the series in late 1959 (the episode aired January 3, 1960, two days after his first Twilight Zone) which apparently only survives in written form today:

The cue is titled "Birthday Present", and it's a nice little gift for us to receive as the campaign is nearing its (very successful) end, less than two days from now!

Sorry for not replying sooner, tj, and sorry you missed this first crowdfunding campaign! Backers got their copies last weekend, and in a little over three weeks there will be a wide lossless download release for these two scores. I think Leigh might consider streaming further down the road... but keep your eyes open in September when he plans to launch a second crowdfunding campaign for a couple more Goldsmith GE Theater scores.

Hopefully this time it will be more episodes together so they can generate bigger interest and hopefully CD (if not as part of this one, then the next campaign) in not too distant future...

I think the way Leigh is making this work is basically two episodes at a time, when he can fit them in. I just was communicating with him again this morning and gave my recommendation of which two he should tackle next. Over the next 36 hours he is looking over written and recorded material to make his decision.

Campaign just ended at 43.6% over goal — Huzzah!! Now for me to get cracking on writing those “Legend That Walks Like a Man” liner notes. I can do that one by watching the episode, unlike “Hitler’s Secret”. Maybe I can even finish them before Leigh finishes reconstructing it by ear….
