INTRADA Announces: ANOTHER 48 HRS. Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER INTRADA ISC 471 Intrada kicks off 2022 with an expanded release of James Horner's score to the 1990 Paramount film Another 48 HRS. Thematically and stylistically it relies on the score to the original, with added twists and turns to fit the new story. A new color is added into the mix – the shakuhachi, to characterize the bikers who see themselves as a romanticized, modern-day version of feudal Japanese rōnin. Unlike the previous film, the sequel required substantially more music. Even so, there was a considerable amount of music dropped or dialed out of the finished film. The score was originally featured on a release from Scotti Bros, featuring 20 minutes of score plus vocals. For this release, Intrada used Shawn Murphy's film mixes to create the expanded program in film order as James Horner originally intended, bringing the program to 47 minutes. The program also includes seven minutes of several alternates and as is customary at Intrada, placed in "The Extras" after the main program. In this new outing, Reggie (Eddie Murphy) is a free man and it is Jack (Nick Nolte) who is threatened with incarceration. Jack has been on a reckless crusade to expose a nebulous drug lord known as the Iceman and must find hard evidence within 48 hours or lose his badge. Reggie can ID the Iceman, who was the source of the money he stole years ago. Reggie is resentful but has plans for the cash, tied to a man he befriended in prison, so he plays along. But Jack’s police allies are stretched thin and a mysterious man has hired a group of outlaw bikers to take down Reggie and Jack in an orgy of violence. Having listened to this album, I must say that while I appreciate the more in-depth ideas of the sequel score, the original is a much better sounding recording. The original is extremely detailed and full, while the sequel comparatively sounds like it's drowning in reverb and a bit shrill. Interestingly, very few Dolby-encoded recordings have impressed me. |
