INTRADA Announces:

CHATO'S LAND
Music Composed and Conducted by JERRY FIELDING
INTRADA ISC 409

Intrada brings back one of Jerry Fielding's classic western scores, revisiting the 1972 Michael Winner-directed Chato's Land. The early '70s was and intensely prolific period for Fielding, and one where his creative genius was on display to the extreme – filled with such masterpieces as The Nightcomers, The Mechanic, Scorpio and Straw Dogs. His untimely passing was nothing short of devastating. The music to Chato's Land stands firmly among the aforementioned titles and again showcases the passion Fielding brought to everything he touched. As the late Nick Redman, one of Fielding's biggest champions, commented in his liner notes:

It's a fierce, dark, difficult work, full of anger and tension. It is notable for its non-reliance on familiar western motifs. Instead, Fielding conjures a uniquely interesting musical language that creates an all-pervasive chilling barbarity; a cruelty that is always present, never romanticized, and is seemingly part of the land itself. It swirls around the luckless protagonists, closing in upon them and ultimately shutting them down.

Intrada's initial release in 2008 was the premiere release from the first generation stereo session tapes from MGM's library, bringing a new depth and clarity previously unheard, and offering the first complete presentation of this powerful and aggressive score. It also sold out very quickly. For this new addition, Intrada has created an all-new master, removing some of the less musical assemblies from the prior release and allowing the score to flow as Fielding originally intended, as many of the cues live as their own separate entities.

In the film, Charles Bronson stars as Chato, an Apache "breed" who kills the local sheriff in self-defense. A posse pursues, but they underestimate Chato, who toys and lures them into hostile terrain. When things escalate, Chato moves from toying to killing. Chato's Land is a tale of race hatred – another in a series of knock-out Fielding/Winner collaborations.

Great score. Highly recommended for fans of Fielding and action/adventure scores who missed the previous edition.

I will not double dip in this case as, unlike Lawman that was reissued from a better source, the previous edition of Chato’s Land was from the same sources and already sounded fantastic.

I also see that three tracks from the previous edition which merged two tracks are now split (tracks 3-4; 6-7 and 12-13). Such tracks were already chronological in the previous release but now are separated for the delight of those who hate crossfades (although in the previous edition overlaps were already minimum, with a track practically finishing before the joined track started)

Don’t know exactly why but some of the style of the music remind me vaguely of Brian May’s Mad Max 2 - The Road Warrior.

Will adopt the new cover for my iTunes version.

Road Warrior, what now???

Missed this one, looking forward to nabbing a copy - and listening with an ear of attention to similarities to May's work.
Always fun & interesting to listen to these things with a reference or different view.

"removing some of the less musical assemblies from the prior release"...

Can someone explain what "less musical assemblies" means?

Sometimes cues were put together not because they made musical sense but it reduced the number of tracks on the album.

I'm trying to recreate the Four Film Suites LP, unfortunately some tracks from Chato's Land was left off the Film Music Vol 1 Bay Cities CD to make way for the Nightcomers - the missing tracks were as follows -

1. The Indian Convention (3:48)
2. Guerilla Maneuvers (4:04)
3. Wild Horse Roundup/ Moment of Mourning (2:14)
4. Attack In The Gorge (2:40)

Presumably the missing tracks were featured in Film Music Vol 4 Bay Cities (Chato's Land/Mr. Horn) where Chato was presented as 2 suites totaling 20 mins each, I need help in identyfying where these cues are within the suites.

Even more confusingly, the Intrada CD's have different timings for the tracks named as Indian Convention (1:35) and
Attack In Gorge (1:53).

Finally, the Entr'acte (2:02) cue from Straw Dogs was also removed form the Bay Cites CD, maybe this was renamed for the Intrada CD? In terms of timings this is an exact match for "Trencher's Farm".
