I'm not musically educated enough to know if what I'm talking about is called a motif or termed something else. But I first noticed this on Barry's Bond scores, On Goldfinger, the track "Death of Tilly", on You Only Live Twice the track (the latter half) of "James Bond- Astronaut," on OHMSS the track "Blofeld's Plot", on Man With Golden Gun the track "Scaramanga's Fun House," Diamonds Are Forever's Theme for Mr. Wint & Mr. Kidd. Outside of his Bond scores, you can hear it on The Specialist on the track "Ray Meets May at Her Funeral", Night Game's "Phantom of the Orgasm." Does anyone out there know What I'm talking about? |

I have no musical background or much musical vocabulary either, yet I recognize what you're talking about. And the fact that you can point this out supports why I balk at description of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE as "a monothematic score." To me that word implies "basis in one single theme." What -- is a motif considered too brief to be a theme? Anyway, things such as that eight-note phrase recurring across different Bond scores is one aspect of why the series used to be so enjoyable to kids who were score-responsive growing up. |

Barry often often constructed themes or specific phrases in two measures, in 4/4 time. He was fond of writing a counter melody (often in the bass line) consisting entirely of quarter notes, the result being four notes in each measure, and thus eight notes total. Did that make any sense? |

I generally just drop the needle and listen, the enjoyment and comfort I derive is probably similar to a canine paying attention to sound. ![]() |
