I use iTunes and MusicBee to curate and maintain my music library (which consists to 95% or so of lossless conversions of my actual CD collection). This is then transferred to my NAS for home distribution on my stereo system (or my phone/headset). I don't use these players to actually listen to music, just to get it ready so I can listen to it.
I am going to be investing in a new NAS some time this year/next year, but I am still very unsure which way to go.
I checked out Roon and find that quite interesting, but there are some drawbacks. First, it is very expensive, secondly, it has no folder view, third, while I think the cool music connection features are nice, not sure if and how they interfere with my tagging structure (which took quite a while for me to figure out how to tag classical music in iTunes in a way that makes sense and is manageable). Also, while I use Qobuz, again I don't really need many of the more advanced features of Roon, so I don't feel like shelling out the dough. When investing into a new NAS, I might get one that could make into a Roon server, just in case, even though I'm not sure I will use Roon.
Not sure if JRiver or Plex or what will be up to what I really want. The one thing MusicBee can do (and iTunes, for example, cannot) is to handle assign multiple genres to a recording. Now that is such an extremely useful feature, I would like to see that in a whatever media server I ultimately decide on.
