TROY
Music Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
INTRADA Special Collection 380

Released by Warner Bros. in 2004, Troy is the latest release in Intrada's ongoing efforts to reexamine and expand the work of James Horner. For Troy, Horner composed one of the longest scores of his career, some two hours in length, all of it written and recorded in relatively short order to replace another score. The cues were amazingly well-spotted, appearing in the finished theatrical cut precisely where Horner intended them to appear, with very little editing or truncating of what was recorded during the sessions— a rather uncommon occurrence in film scoring, especially with scores of such extreme length. There is a wealth of previously unreleased music, and to prepare this Intrada 2-CD set, Intrada was provided access to all the final takes from the digital two-track scoring session masters made by Simon Rhodes at the Todd-AO Scoring Stage in Studio City, California. The sequence of music in this set follows that of the film with one exception. In keeping with Horner’s own original album preference, the orchestral portion of the end credits plays out of the climactic “Sacking Of Troy” sequence, followed by the song as a standalone track.

Customary for the composer, several of the cues are quite lengthy, encompassing a wide variety of thematic material and emotional content. There are several important themes and numerous smaller ideas as well. Even with such an array of melodies and motifs to work with, Horner followed his architectural norm by finding the heart of the overall story and building his music outward from there.

Troy was an ambitious attempt by writer David Benioff and director Wolfgang Petersen to recount the story of the Trojan War stripped of its mythological accretions. Inspired by Homer’s Iliad and, in part, Virgil’s Aeneid, the film features an all-star cast and realistic digital special effects on a scale that would not have been possible even a few years earlier. As the story begins, the ruthless Agamemnon (Brian Cox) has united the fractious kingdoms of Greece, and now sets his sights on the impregnable fortress-city of Troy, ruled by aged Priam (Peter O’Toole). Agamemnon’s brother Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson) has made peace with Trojan prince Hector (Eric Bana), but the pact shatters when Helen (Diane Kruger), wife of Menelaus, flees to Troy with her lover Paris (Orlando Bloom), Priam’s younger son. Agamemnon seizes the opportunity to besiege Troy, marshaling allies such as wily Odysseus (Sean Bean), mighty Ajax (Tyler Mane) and— most crucially—the legendary Achilles (Brad Pitt).

So, what's the deal with the material not available for license? Too close to a temp track for comfort?

Expanded Horner from Intrada ORDERED ! regardless of the material not available for license.
But I too would like to know the answer to TNF's question.

Another question: Is Warner open to releasing Yared's unused masterpiece?

Excellent release. Superb score by Mr. Horner. Definitely worth the upgrade in my view.

By the way, is this the first release where the art design isn’t by Sikoryak? Either way - thank you!

My copy is "Out for Delivery", so I should get it real soon.

I know the 2 cues that were not available for licensing were basically the OST track 2, "Troy".

So that I can reintegrate this cue into the digital playlist, where would it be in the playlist?

You would have to place track 2 from the OST in between tracks 4 and 5 of disc 1 of this new release, based on the track order.

The four note motif of death, a score that isn't on the level of his usual work, the Shostakovich inspiration, Josh Groban as Achilles in song:

James Horner talks TROY

It's nice to see such candor and detail from him. The circumstances under which he worked resulted in one of the last scores I would choose to showcase Horner's talents as an artist. Very few composers can be a Goldsmith in delivering entirely original works under the tightest of deadlines.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure Troy should follow track 5.

In any case, I'm enjoying this release quite a bit. But I'm also surprised how much of the complete score is synthesized. I'm thinking of the string passages in a lot of smaller cues. Or at least they sound like it.

You're right, it goes between tracks 5 & 6, not between tracks 4 & 5.
