Hey Doug... I guess if anyone should know the answer to this question, it will be you!
I know that on all releases of Hoosiers it says, "Theme from Hoosiers performed by Jerry Goldsmith", but did he perform the percussion part as well? I always figured that Joel performed the percussion part.
This has been bugging me for 30 years... it sure would be nice to have it finally cleared up! :)

Joel G. said the first film his dad let him work on was Runaway. Since it preceded it Hoosiers by 2 years the answer is maybe. Using a MIDI synth a single musician could program and perform all the parts then put them together. Sorry Doug didn't help. He was probably on vacation in Disneyland again.

Doug gets less and less time lately to write on the Forum. No good reason other than just lots of work. :)

Everything on the "Theme" version of Hoosiers was done electronically, including Jerry's beloved Simmons Drums, so as far as "performing" is concerned, Jerry definitely hit the keys necessary to get the sounds he wanted. Since he credited Joel with co-producing the track, it seems likely the credit was for actually programming the synths and helping get the various layers of music on tape. The orchestral score was recorded In Hungary so some of the more-detailed individual credits are murkier than the norm, such as Mike Ross-Trevor bringing the session masters back to London to do the actual mixing and so forth. It's safe to say the percussion parts on the theme are "played" by Jerry inasmuch as he created the sounds he wanted electronically. The orchestral recordings were made, of course, by the Hungarian players... though some further sampling and pre-records and whatnot may have been made here or in London either before or after the Hungary sessions, similar to what Jerry possibly did with Extreme Prejudice and Rent-A-Cop.

Thanks, Doug, for clearing that up!
