INTRADA Announces:

MALONE
Composed and Conducted by DAVID NEWMAN
INTRADA Special Collection Volume 45

The year 1987 was eary in the career of David Newman. With only a handful of film scores to his name, including the previous year's Critters and the same year's The Kindred, Newman was emerging with a singular voice, heralding a new composer to the scene that film music enthusiasts would embrace and eagerly anticipate. The Orion film Malone afforded Newman the chance to continue the Americana style he integrated into Critters and The Kindred, but with significantly more opportunity to write full blown action music.

Malone starred the ever-likable Burt Reynolds and bore some resemblance to First Blood and Witness: heroes from military or police backgrounds move into small, peaceful communities with disastrous consequences. Here Malone stumbles upon a reactionary takeover plot headed by Cliff Robertson, operating out of this seemingly sleepy town.

Newman's score features four primary themes. There's a four-note motif for Malone himself -- a study in lonely heroism often voiced by horns or solo trumpets. This is first presented in the "Main Title," which with its surging horns, minor key string lines, and harp ostinatos is reminisicent of his later music he composed for Hoffa. The score features a gentle theme for strings representing the small town Malone takes refuge in and, more specifically, the father and daughter who become his surrogate family. There's a romantic theme for Malone's relationship to his CIA compatriot and finally a hymn-like, traditional flavored melody for Delany and his group of thugs. Combine these with dramatic action music and the result is a powerful David Newman score finally available on compact disc.
This release is limited to 1500 units.

Hey Roger,

Well, I can tell why Doug likes this score -- just listen to those trumpets and that "Americana" sound! (With a definite nod towards Jerry's "First Blood" score, I think...)

Missed out on this one the first time around, Found it for a great price used. I'm really surprised how much I am enjoying this score. I guess it's a case of the score being much better than the film.(IMHO)

Like I just said about a North score at FSM, this is why these boards can be good. Dug this up to revisit today. I love DN in this era, have no call why I wouldn't like it - all the elements are here but I never get into this one. Makes no sense! Also why I keep everything, so...trying again now!

It's a mini-masterpiece for sure, and while still firmly rooted in the '80s, it is the most '70s sounding score that I've heard from David Newman. Man, he would have been one hell of a Silver Age composer. Instead, he is one hell of a Bronze and Tin Age composer.
