Interesting little video NetFlix put together comparing Stranger Things to the '80s movies that influenced it. I have to note, being who I am, that in spite of the electronic score being very much a throwback to the '80s, most of the films compared here had large orchestral scores. So perhaps the tone of Stranger Things didn't quite ring true. Or...the stone of Stranger Things doesn't really match the films that influenced it. Think about Goonies, ET, Explorers...they have a sense of wonder and magic to them. Stranger Things is more like X-files/dark/conspiracy thriller. So maybe it's not really a throwback to the carefree feeling of '80s band of kids films and the score does match the tone!

I've been thinking the exact same thing. The score is more in the Fiedel/Faltermeyer vein. It could be a matter of budget constraints. Maybe Giacchino could have scored this with an orchestra (in "Lost mode"), but he's now very busy at the top of the box office... ^^

I think the music for the show is amazing and I am very anxious to buy the CD.

Not overly impressed by the show and absolutely hated the score that just doesn't fit at all in my book and is quite distracting.

I myself was immediately taken by the music. I just love it. Both Volumes arrived this week and I have been playing them both the past 2 days. I agree that the there is no similarity in the music to those films of the 80's. I find it a bit more spare and pulsing. Maybe these dudes influenced a bit by Cliff Martinez. The show is freaking amazing!

Yeah, for me they just blew it with the score. Completely.

Yeah, as Roger accurately notes, most 80s scores -- in the sci-fi / fantasy genre certainly -- were orchestral. Thrillers, Teen flicks, and some horror films (and Peter Weir movies!) generally featured synth scores, but not much else did.

The whole John Carpenter / Tangerine Dream approach to Stranger Things probably squares with how younger people perceive the 80s, but not as it actually was.

Now I know how my mom felt when everyone insisted the people in her youth acted and dressed like the cast of Grease!
