For composer Hugo Montenegro, composing the score for the 1967 Otto Preminger film Hurry Sundown was his first assignment for a major Hollywood director. Montenegro spent three months on location, later crediting the director with helping teach him how “not to Mickey Mouse a film score” and how to avoid placing musical emphasis in the wrong places. A passionate, dramatic work, Montenegro makes strong use of the ravishing love theme for Lou (Faye Dunaway) and Rad (John Phillip Law). While a lush, stirring orchestral score in general, Jazz also plays a major role in the music, including the score’s longest sequence, “Playing With Dynamite," which runs nearly 11 minutes. Intrada presents the complete score, including the original RCA album assembly on this premiere 2-CD set, featuring nearly 2 hours and twenty minutes of music.

To present this expanded edition of Hurry Sundown, Intrada transferred the 35mm multi-channel scoring session masters, courtesy Paramount Pictures. The release includes the "roadshow" intermission music and exit pieces as well as music Montenegro recorded for the three-plus hour version of the film that is being heard for the first time. Because of the large number of cues recorded and the many channels of multi-track stereo music involved, Intrada had to mix and edit some 42 rolls of magnetic film. Incredibly, every roll survived in magnificent condition, yielding one of the most dynamic stereo presentations of filmmusic ever drawn from the '60s.

The film tells the tale of a pair of sharecroppers (one black, one white) battling the local landowner who wants to buy their land and seal the deal on a lucrative housing development and was filmed on location in what was still a racially-charged region. Based on the 1964 bestseller by K. B. Gilden, the film stars Michael Caine, Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Diahann Carroll, Robert Hooks, Faye Dunaway, Burgess Meredith and George Kennedy.

Great to have this treasure trove of great music discovered at long last. Montenegro's score for this one really blindsided me back in the day as I only knew him from his re-records of the UNCLE music and riffs on Morricone's DOLLARS films. It's going to be wonderful doing a deep dive into this stuff.

(It's a shame Paramount didn't do as good job of keeping track of all the material from Goldsmith's IN HARMS WAY, and, yes Doug, I would be in for a quadruple dip on that one if it ever surfaced from the Paramount vaults.)

I've got loads of music for movies I've never seen that I have picked up simply because the Intrada dudes believed it worthy of a release and I have rarely been disappointed. This is a fantastic score! It almost makes me want to check out the movie, but I've been badly burned by late Preminger before so I'll probably hold off. Apart from "Playing With Dynamite" there's a lovely/slinky quality to the music that I equate with Alex North with most of the edges and spikiness sanded off - but I don't mean that in a bad way. This is one of the most delightful surprises I've treated myself to in a while - and there have been some damn' good CDs released lately.

Thanks, guys - I hope others take the plunge on this one as well.

Just received this album.

It is a really fantastic score and the sound is unbeliavable for a recording from 1966.

I was on the fence for this as I never saw the movie or heard the score before, but I'm glad I decided to get it based on the samples.
It's a really unique score, a kind of western with a 60's coolness sound.

I have been listening to both full versions of "Playing With Dynamite" constantly for the last two days -- the clever instrumental doublings, the unique and simultaneous developments of color and melodic line throughout, the sudden switches to 3/4, the wonderful drum and saxophone work... it's brilliantly constructed music, maintaining tension, interest, and musicality for almost eleven minutes -- and it works like gangbusters in the film, too. (I saw the movie in 35mm at MoMA a month or two ago, and came away quite liking it, when I was led to expect something totally disastrous. As high melodrama it's quite something, and there's a bizarrely wry and satiric sensibility behind the overheated, and yet somehow involving storyline. I found it eminently watchable, anyway.)

All of the other thematic material is wonderful, too -- immediately memorable, and all orchestrated and performed with tremendous style and precision. I won't be getting any of this material out of my head for a good long time.

It's been a banner year for all of our beloved labels, and I imagine we'll continue to see a panoply of wonderful music released in the remainder of 2016, but I have to say, this may end up being my favorite release of the year, and no one is more surprised or delighted about that than I am.
