Intrada inaugurates its new line of 180-gram vinyl releases with Richard Band's colorful fantasy/horror score to the 1986 film Troll. Featuring custom artwork by Paul Shipper on UV coated stock and a brand new mastering for vinyl, this resurrected format allows for generous showcasing of the artwork the world gave up when it moved away from vinyl some 30 years ago. But it's back!

In the score proper, Band fashioned a pair of musical ideas that range from a serene, major-key melody infused with harp arpeggios, triangle, electronics and other bell effects to a diabolical, rhythmic ostinato for chorus and strings identifying the troll terrorizing the building. As with the earlier CD release, Intrada has retained the original LP program fashioned carefully by the composer. His original 1985 soundtrack album, featured large, cohesive "movements" -- a film music symphony, of sorts. As the score progresses through its movements, Band merely suggests at the "troll" motif in "Cantos I", explores it further in "Cantos II", then lets it finally emerge in force as the dynamic "Cantos Profanae" for full chorus and orchestra.

In the film, an unassuming San Francisco apartment complex is home to a hidden gateway to the troll universe. When an unsuspecting family moves into the building, a troll abducts the family's youngest daughter and assumes her likeness. Free of its ugly appearance, the troll moves from apartment to apartment, transforming tenants into mythical creatures and the rooms within to the enchanted woodlands of the troll world. Only the older brother and the building's resident witch can save the world at large from the Troll universe. The film Stars Michael Moriarty, Noah Hathaway, June Lockhart, Anne Lockhart, Sony Bono, Shelley Hack, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Jenny Beck. John Carl Buechler masterminded the creature effects, penned the story, and directed, as well.

Beautifully designed LP to one of Band's finest scores! Nice work, Intrada!

Especially given Intrada released the CD some years back anyway. It's not like that doesn't exists any more.

Liked the cover, new artwork but faithful to the film, and that Intrada kept the logo unchanged (unlike some other vinyls released with modern artwork and fonts that do not resemble the respective films at all).

In this case it was already a special arrangement of the music to fit a vinyl program. I hope for the upcoming vinyls Intrada do special album arrangements of the material (keep the cds c&c but I'd love to have alternative 'albums' on the vinyl)

Here are some suggestions I posted in December that I reiterate here:

"As Doug mentioned that Intrada will be issuing vinyl in the future, probably 3rd quarter 15, a few suggestions:

- adopt cover design that is faithful to the original art / logos of the film. One of the coolest aspects of vinyl is the big cover, please keep it faithful to the original art (I'd love a Jaws The Revenge cover similar to my avatar)
- keep releasing the "as complete as possible" thing on CD, but on vinyl you could experiment with specially arranged albums of 40 min. selections with merged tracks, etc. Provided the complete thing is available on Cd the vinyl can stick to the "album" concept - as it is anoying to have to flip sides 2-3 times for a xx min score.
- keep the same transparency you already have for the cds about the quality of the source used (pure analogue, resolution of the digital source, etc, so we know if the vinyl might sound "better" than the cd.
- more importantly: please no "exclusive on vinyl" material. I like vinyls and recently acquired a new turntable. But I keep tranfering my music to digital and trasferring it to iPods, please keep all stuf available in digital form."

I would love to see Jaws The Revenge released in the format, as it is the only Jaws film unreleased in vinyl.
