I've been catching up on a lot of Netflix shows as of late, and have come to realize that I find myself not paying nearly as much attention to the music as I do with older shows. It seems that it has less to do with the music being not as interesting than it does with the different storytelling aesthetic that newer content brings.

Specifically, I finally caught-up to watching Black Mirror, the brilliant sci-fi anthology show. It wasn't until about the fifth episode in when I realized that I did not even care to evaluate the effect music had on the show. Meanwhile, every episode of classic shows like Twilight Zone has me savoring the impact of their music scores even if it's for the fiftieth time that I've watched them.

Unless the series is a throwback in the manner of The Orville, it seems to me that sound design-ish scoring often is the right way to handle the new way of making television. The storytelling can still be just as engrossing as the classics.

Speaking of Netflix I canĀ“t think of any of their movies or TV show that would have a solid score... it must have something to do with the budgets as well since there is hardly enough money to record some of the scores properly eg Little Evil might have been at least a good score (when movie is such a trash) if there was a sufficient budget to record it properly.

On the other hand there is Lost in Space, which is one of my favorite scores from last year and the only recent TV show (besides Orville) I can think of with a pretty strong score.

I still have high hopes for upcoming VELVET BUZZSAW if anyone actually cares enough to release the score...

The western miniseries Godless has a wonderful score. It starts out very restrained and low-key sort of modern approach. But then it gets a bit James Horner-y and by the last couple episodes it's practically a Morricone level of operatic. Really impressed by Carlos Rafael Rivera's work on this.

Now days, there are very few people who watches TV. It is the world where internet is ruling. I cannot stop watching shows by and other good movies on Netflix. It is convenient to watch your favorite shows and movies at any point of the day.

Well, you can pretty much write off 80% + of network shows, but Roger, Yavar, and Bruce have some good suggestions. Having just binged the second season of WESTWORLD, I have to say I was very impressed with Jawadi's work this season.

Basic cable and premium cable, because of their much less serious time strictures, seem to be the home of the traditional, developed, full blown main title sequences. The networks seem to treat the show openings as if they were geared to an audience of AD/HD types. (They probably are!)
