Just re-watched Re-Animator over the weekend and had to break out my Re-Animator/Ghoulies soundtrack once more! There's something I first noticed years ago and now thought I might ask about here to see if the great folks at Intrada or anyone else might have some insight. Beginning at about 0:26 in the track "Where's the Cat?/The Cellar" there is a distinct, haunting melody that is repeated several times in the soundtrack in different variations. This same melody is heard in Amityville II: The Possession during Sonny Montelli's birthday party when he 'calls' his sister to his room. Amityville II was released in 1982, 3 years before Re-Animator, but I've never found any mention of this musical similarity between the two films including on the Re-Animator soundtrack and liner notes. I know it's been well commented that Richard Band's music was, ahem, influenced by Bernard Herrmann as humorously noted on the La-La Land release (though Band's music for Re-Animator more than stands on its own and is brilliant and wildly addicting), but in this case the two melodies are virtually identical. Does anyone know the story behind this? Was this melody in fact originally composed by Lalo Schifrin or is this a library music cue that was adapted by both composers?
...Which leads to my next question: is there any possibility of there being a soundtrack release for Amityville II (or even a new release of the original The Amityville Horror soundtrack with the actual film score)? That score's been number two on my Grail list for years, after Psycho II which the folks at Intrada did a fantastic job in bringing to light!
