INTRADA Announces: THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 327 Composer Jerry Goldsmith was 36 when he composed the music for the 1966 Columbia film The Trouble with Angels, coming after his score to A Patch of Blue and right before The Blue Max. He had not scored many comedies to that point, but still had come into a voice of his own. He chose to compose music that acknowledged the girls’ cartoonish antics as well as their rock ’n’ roll era, but tied it all together with a versatile theme, containing an emotional sensitivity that matches the film’s sincere heart. This release mark's the premiere appearance of the stereo soundtrack from the original first-generation LP masters, presenting a striking clarity as heard on Intrada's previous release, The Elmer Bernstein AVA Collection. In addition, Sony Pictures provided the complete mono session elements, allowing Intrada to also present the entire score in mono, which includes several key musical sequences not included on the original LP. The film was adapted from the 1962 novel Life With Mother Superior, written by New York advertising queen Jane Trahey and based on her own experiences attending a Catholic all-girls school in Chicago. Starring Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior, The Trouble with Angels opens with Mary (Hayley Mills) reluctantly arriving at St. Francis Academy for Girls. On the train she meets fellow classmate Rachel (June Harding), and suggests her first of many “scathingly brilliant ideas." For the next four years, Mary tests the patience of Mother Superior: smoking cigarettes, complaining, putting dish soap in the nuns’ tea, giving tours of the off-limits cloister, and plenty of other miscreant mischief. Gradually, though, Mary’s heart begins to soften. Yet another one of those albums that you don't expect in this form. If you guys happened upon first-generation stereo tapes of the Mainstream album for The Wrong Box, please don't hesitate to re-release that one and ignore the inevitable moaning. Harper goes without saying. EDIT: Oh, and it's nice to see someone mention the Hoosiers theme appearing here decades earlier. I always found it odd how musical discussions about this score never seemed to bring up this neat fact. |

It's great to see this title get the "Sebastian treatment" even though Harkit had similarly put out their grey-market version. One question: I could have sworn I'd read that the LP of this was a re-recording (as was the Mainstream Stagecoach LP, which it was previously paired with on Mainstream's CD two-fer) but perhaps it's more of a situation like Sebastian, where the album had a unique track or two, or unique sweeteners. Can anyone expand further? Anyway, this new release seems like the best that could be hoped for on this score. Intrada has been having an amazing year overall, and with Goldsmith in particular: The River Wild, Warlock, The Ghost and the Darkness, the original recording of his Judge Dredd trailer cue, and now this! Add that to Varese's recent deluxe Gremlins 2 and LLL's complete (though only expanded by 1 27-second track) Magic, and Goldsmith fans have been in heaven! Yavar |

Very much enjoying this definitive presentation. The album tracks are a revelation. So much detail and stereo separation. Even the mono tracks of the film soundtrack sound rather good and are very clean. Lovely release. Thank you! |

Love this score, typical top shelf work Intrada, but for me the biggest revelation is...Goldsmith '66. I'm an 80's kid, so '78 & '82 were always the watershed years in my book. I knew what he did in 66, but never really put it together how strong that years work was, how much I love each one & how varied they are. Bravo, thanks for the wake up, so to speak! For the lazy, '66 includes: Trouble with Angels Blue Max Seconds Sand Pebbles Stagecoach Our Man Flint -Sean |

Hi Roger / Doug, just for the benefit of the sceptics over at FSM, I take it the recently released digital version of the expanded The Trouble With Angels is yours? That is, you hold the copyright? |
