INTRADA Announces: RIO BRAVO Composed and Conducted by DIMITRI TIOMKIN INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 300 “Tiomkin relinquishes the tutti of the conventional symphony orchestra…in favor of the more exotic, specifically Mexican sonorities... The result is a score of almost chamber-music-like character, much of it nocturnal and atmospheric. The film drifts in and out pianissimo…to the strains of the simple folk song-like main theme.” -- Christopher Palmer Composer Dimitri Tiomkin was no stranger to working with director Howard Hawks or the western genre, encompassing Hawks' classics such as Only Angels Have Wings, The Big Sky, Red River, The Thing and Land of the Pharaohs and other westerns including High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Last Train from Gun Hill. For Rio Bravo, Tiomkin outfitted the director’s leisurely paced but dramatically concentrated western with a genre score that is notably restrained and subtle -- an unusual approach for the composer. The result is a score that is an essential part of Rio Bravo’s drama. In the opening sequence dialogue is notably absent, yet Tiomkin’s score runs continuously, setting mood and reinforcing the on-screen dramatic tension. Warner Bros. provided access to their entire scoring session elements, including the lengthy session masters stored on 2″ monaural tape. As the composer had scored a longer picture than what was finally released, Intrada discovered a number of additional cues not in the finished picture, as well as two versions of the trailer music and some fascinating alternates. Closing the extras portion of this release of Rio Bravo are two studio recordings of the movie’s main vocal themes, sung by Dean Martin, prepared for the Capitol label and released in 1959 on a 45 rpm record. All presented on this 2-CD set. In the film, John T. Chance (John Wayne), sheriff of Presidio County, Texas, has a bull by the tail. There is a cold-blooded killer locked up in his jail, but he must wait several days for the U.S. marshal to take his prisoner into custody. Meanwhile, the murderer’s brother, wealthy rancher Nathan Burdette, has the town in a stranglehold, with hired guns waiting to pounce. Chance has only two deputies to help him—a gimpy old coot named Stumpy (Ricky Nelson) and Dude, a friend who was once a skilled marksman but is now nicknamed Barachón (drunk) (Dean Martin) by the local Mexicans. And when a beautiful lady gambler named Feathers (Angie Dickinson) comes to town, Chance’s problems multiply. I know Ricky Nelson sang Cindy in the movie. I thought he also did a version of Rio Bravo. Did Intrada not get a license for those tracks as I don't see them listed. |

Awesome! Congratulations and thanks, Intrada! Rio Bravo has been my favorite movie for a very long time and still is; I watch it every year on, or in the week of (depending on the circumstances), my birthday. Tiomkin's music is wonderful; the main title is a joy to hear every time I start playing the movie-- quiet, nice and peaceful. Now I'll be able to play the whole score all year round! ![]() ![]() ![]() The other two releases are great, too. |

Thanks for the info Doug. I was just curious. It doesn't affect my decision to buy it. I was going to anyway as Tiomkin is my favorite film composer. |

I'm not normally a Tiomkin fan and I'm unfamiliar with this film because even though I love classic westerns (and Howard Hawks) I really don't like John Wayne most of the time. BUT I listened to the sound clips and this does sound up my alley after all. I like that it's more restrained early on and less of the overdone orchestral Tiomkin I'm familiar with. But one of the few examples of the latter that I love is The Alamo (thanks Tadlow/Prometheus!) so when that Mexican trumpet kicks in with the theme I'm still quite happy! Kudos on what looks like a major (and definitive) release, Intrada gang! Yavar |

The release of RIO BRAVO's score is quite an event. You guys at Intrada kept the lid on this project for a long time, didn't you. I wouldn't have missed the songs on this set if the high cost prevented or held up the score. Like you said, RIO BRAVO is about Dimitri Tiomkin. I'm so pleased to finally be able to hear it. Many thanks for RIO BRAVO. Is the pressing limited to how many copies? Now if only it's brother score THE ALAMO could be found and saved and released somehow. |

This is a dream come true... seriously! I just send a mail to Intrada to add RIO BRAVO to a still pending order of mine. The samples sound fantastic. My late father would have loved this release, too. I have fond memories watching this movie with him when I was still a kid. One of Tiomkin's all time great western scores. To me, one of the most exciting soundtrack releases in some time. |

This IS, indeed, a dream come true and my favorite Tiomkin release since Intrada's THE WAR WAGON. I listened to a reel-to-reel recording of the film for the music for so many years it's going to be sheer joy to finally hear so much of this wonderful stuff in the clear at long last. And, yes, the clips sound superb. Thanks guys, you're the best! |
