When you said you were going to sort of take a vacation from film music for a week-end at Disneyland, Doug, I almost started a thread betting you you could not help noticing things.

I confess I hasn't thought of PotC, though, despite my having read that Jack Sparrow had been included, and that the score would be quoted.
How does it work in the ride? It sure must be a peculiar experience to suddenly hear this, knowing the ride and song very well (I've done the ride several times at several Parks-- both American ones and the French one--, and I have had a Disneyland theme LP for years and years, even before going there), especially with something in such a different style.
How well integrated is it?

As for music from a movie integrated into a ride, they did have Star Tours, which surely features Star Wars music, doesn't it? I don't remember, but I doubt they could do it without a few quotations.

Lucas retouched his movies, Paramount is retouching the original Star Trek series, and Disney has updated its ride to include elements from the movie.
What do you (all) think?
It's rather disturbing.

Lucas, I understand; you may agree or not, and provided he preserves the original trilogy movies as first released theatrically, and keeps releasing them on various formats, wehterh with newer versions or on their own, I can perfectly understand his eprfectionist drive / obsession.

The PotC movies are great great great carefree adventure movies. Perfect entertainment. For all our regrets about the score, you can't deny it's enjoyable on its own, and that it works within the movie.
The idea of modifying the ride, however, bother me a bit. It's difficult to pass a judgment without actually seeing it, but I don't like the idea too much.

As for Star Trek, I really don't approve of this. The CGI Enterprise shown looks great, and they will surely do a great job; but the not-so-perfect effects are part of the charm. I guess I should buy the DVD sets soon, just in case.

After this, what will they do? Not simply remake movies, but redo the old ones by retouching them? Replace Harryhausen's wonderful stop-motion animation with CGI? Replace it with CGI that perfectly duplicates the stop-motion jerky & jittering movements, but without the few defects (unwanted spots and shadows?)? Retouch Wayne and Bogart's faces to remove an unwanted blink or change a line?

And why re-record the Star Trek theme? To have a 5.1 track?
Again, the original recording is part of the charm.

To think that all that money and all that technology could be used to restore and preserve movies & scores!
:(

Interesting thoughts. I'm not fond of watching Lucas continually tweak his movies. Art would get nowhere if it kept being modified: composer's re-writing those last few bars of their symphonies from the grave, painters changing colors, authors trying out new motivations for characters, whatever.

It never occured to me that those Disneyland theme park rides would be art. But maybe they are. Anyway, the tweaks didn't bother me. I don't know the ride well enough to say I caught them all. But Klaus Badelt's music comes in during the sea battle and seems tastefully inserted. I don't recall any music originally playing during that particular section of the ride so it may not alter anything George Bruns did. But other experts with fresher memories may want to chime in.
