Doesn't seem like a worthwile past time to me. I mean, there is no wear when playing CDs, and CDs are not as easily damaged as LPs. So why not listen to your CDs instead of listen to copies of your CDs? Of course, unlike the tapes made from LPs, the CD-Rs you make from CDs should sound just as good as the original CD, so you would not have that drawback, but still... it's a lot of hassle for... what purpose?

I can understand making a backup CD-R copy of some really rare CD that cannot be replaced easily, but my entire collection? I would not even know where to store all the CDs.

Some people transfer all their CDs to MP3; there is some sound loss there, but you can store a lot of CDs on very little space (as long as you got large enough hard discs at hand). That might be a backup option.

The only reason I'll make a CD-R from a CD is to try and improve it, i.e., sort of " remaster " it. With my basic software, you can re-record the CD, emphasizing or de-emphasizing the frequency response to your taste. Sometimes it's to no avail, but often I feel I've actually improved the sound. One example would be JOE VS THE VOLCANO. To my ears the CD is too loud in the mid-range, so I've reduced this area a few decibals, and voila !
A more satisfactory listen, to me, anyway.......

I do a lot of CD-R recording with my collection. I do it to make theme compilations. For example, I will have an adventure theme and record selections from multiple CD's. Favorite cuts from many composers all on one disc. I have a lot of fun doing it too. That is the main reason I record from the originals.

Yeah, same here. I've made myself some "anthology" CDs that contain various pieces from various sources for various occasions.

Backup & playing copies of precious CDs-- Young Sherlock Holmes and Jerry Goldsmith at Twentieth Century Fox.

Edited playing copies of scores featuring songs (Sleeping With the Enemy, for instance, with that annoying song right in the middle of the CD), or to rearrange the tracks in chronological order (Back to the Future-- Part III), or to add some music (opening & end titles from The Village).

I have also decided to make at least wav backup copies of my rare CDs.
