There are a number of posts on FSM stating that the QB VII tapes are missing and that this info came from the Intrada forum... however despite my best efforts I can find no Intrada forum post or other page that mentions it.
Is this just a rumour that has come about through Chinese whispers?

Can anyone point me in the direction of the forum post that started it?

I will always take the position of 'never say never' regarding 'lost' scores, but I was curious about the status of this one...

I myself saw it confirmed by either Doug or Roger or both. If the search function's not bringing it up on this forum it must've been on the FSM forum (perhaps when James Fitzpatrick inquired, before deciding to go ahead with his complete re-recording).

In my opinion this may be Goldsmith's magnum opus, so if by some miracle tapes ever do turn up, I will eagerly buy this again! Heck, even if the LP recording got remastered and reissued, I'd buy that again too! (Plus, didn't the first issue of the LP have an alternate cue that's never been issued on CD, or am I remembering wrong? If I'm not that could make a great bonus on a reissue.)

Well, one thing is for sure: You can bet your bottom dollar that a label would do whatever they can to promptly release the original recording if suitable session tapes were or are ever found.

This isn't That Man Bolt, Skullduggery or other scores wanted by me and one other guy that we're talking about here. Rather, this is a recording that many people actually want. :mrgreen:

I suppose that it's just one of those things that producers care not to comment on for whatever reason.

The same can be wondered about some beloved John Williams scores. Why hasn't The Eiger Sanction (film + album tracks) been released? Are the Dracula tapes really missing, and where did the rumor claiming that they are start? Why haven't there been re-releases of Jaws 2 and The Towering Inferno?

Those and other questions never get definitively answered. So be it.

About the only thing I can add here is that we should never give up hope with regards to anything considered missing.

I was told to give up on my obsessive search for all of those "missing" AVA masters. I never gave up and then one day I had the actual three-channel session masters in my hands... in mint condition no less. I recall all the comments years ago about how The Black Hole could never happen because of the obsolete 1979 digital format. I never gave up and then one day Disney had the masters ready for our "co-branding"... in fabulous condition no less. After years of searching and being told "no complete scoring elements exist" I awoke one day to have Sony and Chace sending me what turned out to be the complete original cues for On The Waterfront. I also recall being ready to end a two-decades long search for any music-only elements for Cromwell only to have them show up in full stereo, mislabeled inside Columbia Pictures boxes containing the dialog and sound effects elements.

A few years ago Varese released an expanded Great Train Robbery but informed listeners that a key action cue was "lost". A few years later we released the same score... this time with that "lost" action cue.

And my 'never-give-up' feelings were really stoked when the "totally lost" masters to Elmer Bernstein's See No Evil suddenly turned up... complete and in stereo no less.

These are just a handful of my own experiences. I'm sure other labels have similar tales.

Hopefully these discoveries instill a little bit of hope in you folks that other "missing" treasures may still be out there. I refuse to throw in the towel regarding Hugo Friedhofer's Joan Of Arc - albeit admittedly I'm not holding my breath. :)
