INTRADA Announces: THE PRESIDIO Composed and Conducted by BRUCE BROUGHTON INTRADA Special Collection 298 Bruce Broughton’s music for 1988 Paramount film The Presidio is pulse-pounding and exciting, balancing orchestra and synthesizers in equal measure throughout the movie’s chase sequences, climaxing with the standout nine-minute action cue. Much of the composer’s music sets out to enhance the movie’s suspense and underscore the investigation, utilizing a central four-note motif that Broughton adapts to varying dramatic effect, characterized by a wide downward leap on the second note. It was that simple and from this tiny anchor he could take the score inward toward suspense or outward toward action—and, most importantly, develop the motif into a fully realized theme finally heard at the close of the score For Broughton, The Presidio marked the first of three collaborations with director Peter Hyams, with Narrow Margin and Stay Tuned following. This premiere CD featuring the complete score and alternates was mastered from the original session elements, initially recorded on digital 32-track tape at 20th Century Fox Studios by engineer Armin Steiner, then subsequently converted directly into two-track stereo mixes on both digital and analog tape. The resulting audio is crisp, clean and vibrant. The film stars Sean Connery and Mark Harmon in which their characters team to investigate a murder on the San Francisco military base. That is some amazingly propulsive action scoring. This score and Narrow Margin adequately prove what Broughton is capable of in the thriller genre. |

When THE PRESIDIO came out in 1988, I remember I was on the lookout for the soundtrack but never found one. It's been so many years, I don't remember all that much about either the movie or the soundtrack, but I remember that I liked the music, and hey, it's Bruce Broughton, so for me ordering it is a no-brainer. |

Fantastic score and a very welcome release. I bought the promo just a few months ago after catching this on TV, so I'm wondering if there's any chance to include one or two sample tracks from among the extras? |

Pointless nostalgia alert! I'm just re-watching this for the first time in decades. I always liked Peter Hyams' visual sense - latter day Prince of Darkness, really. Sean Connery is effortlessly cool, as usual, but poor Harmon trying to be a bad-ass Clint Eastwood-esque cop is kinda hilarious. Would you believe I somehow forgot how cute Meg Ryan was back then? LOVE her in a little black dress!  Broughton wasn't kidding about the sound effects winning out in the mix. Hyams must not have liked the score that much.
