Brother Sun, Sister Moon is one of my Ortolani faves.

But Ortolani´s output is a mixed bag: From very good to very, very bad.

I've had much the same experience as DS1959. I rather liked GLORY GUYS and had picked up MAYA and SEVENTH DAWN for good prices out of curiousity, but it wasn't until an acquaintance wanted me to do do cleanups and transfers on them (and his copy of ECCO) about five years back that I found myself finally appreciating Ortolani, to the extant that I very much enjoy pulling SEVENTH DAWN off the shelf for a play every so often, and I've always enjoyed MAYA and GLORY GUYS. I have a copy of the Varese LP for CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS around here but that one has never made as strong an impression.

I've never manged to catch up with AFRICA ADDIO or DAY OF ANGER despite some people saying they're a couple of his best.

I had a similar experience with Georges Garvarentz. I'd always seen his albums back in the late '60's and early '70's but just didn't get into him, with the exception of that wonderfully "Thunderball-ish" song from TRIPLE CROSS. Then another client gave me the opportunity to catch up with stuff like MARCO THE MAGNIFICENT, KILLER FORCE, and THE SOUTHERN STAR.

Both Ortolani and Garvarentz remain, for me, highly enjoyable second tier talents.

The only CD I have is RCA's recent 2 CD compilation THE GENIUS OF RIZ ORTOLANI, which is a very good overview of his career in film. Among the gems there is the overture from A SCHOOL OUTING. Lots of horns and a very melodic string line. Melodic strings are really his compositional imprint in my mind, although some of his jazz is pretty catchy ("Good Bye Uncle Tom").

I think of this musician as a "tunesmith", rather than as a dramatic composer of film music. That said, some of the tunes are very nice, and I've always loved the song (sung by Jack Jones) from ANZIO - included in the 2-CD set that Bob refers to.
Sadly, in film music nowadays there aren't even any tunesmiths like Riz Ortolani left; and few dramatic composers of film music either...

No-one to compare.
