Riz Ortolani had a unique sense of melody on his scores and even in his most difficult to handle horror-exploitation works he was extremelly effective, despite he was a melody-focused composer.
His work for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST stands as one of the most provocative soundtracks ever, with its unsettling usage of a beautifull melody to depict the most gruesome images of the Rugero Deodato cult classic. I can also remember his underestimated work for Pupi Avati's ZEDER, a score every fan of the composer should check.
I mostly like his work for grand orchestra, such as his two scores for the TV production LA PRIMAVERA DI MICHELANGELO (1989) and the movie I CAVALIERI CHE FECCERO L'IMPRESA (2001), which uncover his great talent on contemporary and medieval music. Both scores were released on CD (PRIMAVERA on LP too) but especially LA PRIMAVERA is one of the most difficult to find CDs in the market.
Ortolani also had a career in the Italian exploitation cinema of the 70s with many scores for the polizioto movies of the era with the most notable work to be for the movie CONFESSIONE DI UN COMISSARIO DI POLIZIA, a movie with Franco Nero and Martin Balsam. Great urban jazz score.
