Post subject:  How do you organise your collection?

Ok so a recent post got me to a wondering how you guys order your collection? Alphabetically? By composer? By label? Numerically? By year? By genre? A combination? I have a collection of a few hundred cd's and am never sure how to organise them. Just wondered what you guys do?

Basically, I do have my CDs organised alphabetically by composer / performer / band, depending on what makes sense.

So my collection runs through from A like "Adams" all the way to "Z" as in "Zimmer". You will find both Madonna, Aimee Mann, Ennio Morricone and Mozart under "M". If there's more than one composer on a CD, I usually file the CD under one of those composers. Compilations and the like with many artists/composers come ofter "Z". Pretty much works for me that way.

Alphabetically by title

They're on a few shelves & are all over the place, just like my books & DVD/Blu-rays. I just don't have a tidy mind.

Alphabetically by composer, then alphabetically by title. It's the Sheldon factor. :D

My CDs are separated and shelved by soundtracks/score compilations/classical/popular.

Single-score discs are filed alphabetically by film title; compilations (including two-score combo releases) are alphabetical by composer, then in order of acquisition for multiple anthologies by a single composer -- or alphabetically by disc title for anthologies containing multiple composers. Classical and popular are alphabetical by composer/artist(s), again with multiple entries in acquisition order.

Exceptions: My 200+ Jerry Goldsmith CDs (because he's my favorite and I have nowhere near so many by anyone else) are stored by themselves on a tabletop turret, alphabetically by title -- and my few personally made CD-Rs are isolated on one end of a crowded CD shelf, alphabetically by artist or by anthology title.

I've always arranged in no particular order but keeping composers/artists together. With vinyl here's a little idea given me from the owner of a music shop I frequented awhile back... Strips of 1 1/2 by 1/2 inch wood (available at any Home Depot) tacked to the wall then another tacked in front creates a safe ledge for displaying numerous favorite LP covers, I suppose this would work just as well for CD cases. It's a good way to fill in a blank wall by turning it into an ever changing gallery of cover art.

Alphabetically by composer('s surname), within this chronologically by movie's release year.

Having collected CDs virtually since they came out in the mid eighties and having approx 10,000 the practicalities of shuffling the CDs around to keep them in any particular order is too much like hard work. What I do is I stick a dymo generated number on the spine and just keep filling up sheves but i do keep a good database with details of all my purchases. I have also ripped them onto a harddrive so i can access them at a click of the mouse.
I must admit I saw the pictures of that collection last week too and I would love to have my collection set up in label sets as it did look awesome!

Soundtracks are organized alphabeticaly per composer, then chronologically per title.
Non soundtracks alphabetically per artist/band and chronologically per title.

I used to store them alphabetically by movie title, then I changed to alphabetically by composer and alphabetically by film within the composer.

It is good to find alternatives when I whish to experience a certain composer sound and go to through all his scores toghether. It is not so good when you want to find a sepecifically title you remember you have but it is the only Cd by that composer and you can't remember its name... But with the internet it is not actually a problem to find out, and I also keep all copied to my iTunes library.

I organize my collection by label, and then alphabetical by composer. So I may have Miklos Rozsa scores with FSM, Intrada, and Kritzerland.

Alphabetical all the way. Numbers at the beginning, compilations by composer's last name (ie., "Barry" is in the B section), with the occasional exception to keep franchises together (ie., Raiders of the Lost Ark is in the I section). Sue me. ;)

I've always organized my collection by label. I have quite the memory for which label released what; I always know where each title sits on the shelf. : )

The film and television music is alphabetical, with numbers placed as though they were spelled out, (Tower Records style. This makes it easier for people who aren't aficionados to navigate my collection. Compilations are at the end.

Rock/soul and jazz are arranged by artist. Concert hall music is arranged by composer.
