Post subject: | Building a new Johnny Mandel collection... |
I've recently gotten interested in Johnny Mandel's music and find myself building a Johnny Mandel collection. I'm afraid I missed out on some rare scores including Intrada's "The Verdict" and his unused score from "The Seven-Ups". I also missed out on FSM's "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" and "Point Blank". I guess it's better late than never to start collecting a composer's work, right? Anyway, I continue to work on finding his scores and putting them in context of his larger career. I was curious which version of "M*A*S*H" soundtrack I should be looking for. There are several albums including LPs and CDs. Any recommendations? |

Here's a nice (and still available) primer on JM: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds/det ... frica-The/ I like him too, but will be so happy when the day comes I can erase my lp transfer of his finest score, if and/or when a real cd happens: The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea Magnifique! - Sean |

Thanks! I do have that 3CD set and the liner notes are quite extensive. Strangely what sent me delving more into his scores was hearing a score track from "Freaky Friday" where Jack Sheldon does a trumpet solo of the title song "I'd Like To Be You For A Day". It was this light jazz version of the melody and, I have come to find out, classic Mandel. Strangely, I have seen the cover for the LP of "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea" and have been curious as to the music because I have never seen the film. I'm all the more anxious to track it down with such a recommendation ![]() |

Since you're a Disney enthusiast, you should be hassling Intrada for a release of Escape to Witch Mountain. ![]() |

I would probably recommend watching the film of Sailor first since the rather short score is much more powerful aftetwards. It's a somewhat difficult film, even upsetting to me & I love it! Kris Kristofferson wrote the main & mostly featured main theme but don't let that fool you....The orchestration is pure Mandel. It's a quiet & dreamy score with one brief discordant cue at the end. Almost french impressionistic in tone. |

Agatha is a deep, moody score and one I've always liked. Harper LP is a light, groovy swinger and other favorite of mine. |
