Post subject:  George Bruns 100th anniversary

The 3rd of July 2014, we celebrated the 100th anniversay of one of the greatest film composers of all times: George Bruns. He's well known for his work with Walt Disney, a fantastic symphonist willing to rethink an entire Tchaikovsky ballet, a popular songs writer who sold nearly 7 millions copies of The Ballad of Davy Crockett in only a few month, and a tremendous jazzman and tuba/trombone player.

The problem is that very few of his scores were ever released on disc.
- only 1 of his live action movie scores was ever released in 1956 : Westward Ho the Wagons.
- 2 songs albums for the Johnny Tremain movie in 1957 and the Babes in Toyland adaptation in 1962.
- 4 complete soundtracks from animated pictures : Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book and The Aristocats.

That makes only 4 CDs (and complete scores) and 3 outdated LPs in an entire career made of dozens of fantastic scores, including the most popular Disney movies of the 50's, 60's and 70's !

Roger, I know your love for George Bruns. I have faith in you and Intrada !

Anyway, happy birthday to you incredible George Bruns, we love you and your music, from earth to heaven ! :D

Would love the complete score to the TV version of Davy Crockett at the Alamo...

Oddly enough, my favorite Bruns score is the TOMORROWLAND suite on an overpriced Disney CD called WALT DISNEY TAKES YOU TO DISNEYLAND (A Musical Tour of the Magical Kingdom). I was glad to see it had made the transition to digital a few years back, as I remember the music from a 45 my kid brother had in the early 60's that I played to death back them. It's marred by Disney's narration, dialogue and sound effects, but it's prime Bruns (for me anyway.) Some of his best work was for the "Tomorrowland" episodes on the original Disney show.

On the other hand, I recently ran across a clip on YouTube from Ivan Tors' 1968 skindiving/skydiving thriller, THE DARING GAME, and the embarrassingly bad score was done by Bruns. Lord knows, he was never one for subtlety, but this later effort is just plain awful. In looking at his later works at IMDB, I see a credit for a short entitled VD ATTACK PLAN from 1973--oh, how the mighty had fallen.
