INTRADA Announces:

DEEP RISING
Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 278

For the 1988 thriller Deep Rising, an almost postmodern combination of suspense, bloodthirsty violence and comedy made composer Jerry Goldsmith's job more difficult than usual. Goldsmith responded to these challenges with a deceptively complex score sporting multiple rhythmic and thematic elements evident right from the start with a growling, heavy motif for tuba and low brass in the film’s opening cue. For the original 1998 Hollywood Records release of Deep Rising, Goldsmith selected just ten tracks from his lengthy score, totaling about 33 minutes. For this premiere release of the entire score, Intrada was given access to the excellent-condition original Sony 3348-format 48-channel digital session masters courtesy of Walt Disney Records. Listeners can now enjoy over an hour of music pulsating with the composer’s signature action writing. Complex rhythms, a dynamic low-brass theme representing the vicious undersea monsters, a rousing and energetic theme for the salvage vessel, underwater suspense music, exciting and aggressive sequences for brass and strings—all delivered in vivid and punchy digital stereo.

The film tells the story of a salvage vessel run by John Finnegan (Treat Williams), heading for a rendezvous with a massive, high-tech ocean liner, the Argonautica, on its maiden voyage. Finnegan has been hired by the ruthless Hanover (Wes Studi) to take his team of cutthroats and a load of powerful torpedoes to meet the ocean liner. Unbeknownst to Finnegan, Hanover has arranged to scuttle the overpriced vessel for the insurance money—after robbing its boatload of rich passengers. But when Finnegan’s ship ties up alongside the Argonautica he finds that the ship is empty; he eventually discovers that the passengers have been devoured by a gigantic, kraken-like sea creature that is now picking the salvage team off one by one. With his cowardly, smart-mouthed mechanic Joey (Kevin J. O’Connor) and a wily female jewel thief named Trillian St. James (Famke Janssen), Finnegan struggles to escape both the sea monster and Hanover’s thugs before the Argonautica sinks.

Thanks so much to everyone involved! This is one of my favorite Jerry scores and to finally have it complete puts a big smile on my face :D True, the movie wasn't the greatest, but to me it's a fun popcorn flick - the score definitely enhanced my enjoyment of it. Ordered and cannot wait to get it - thanks again!

Ooooh... I just had to pop in and mention that Jerry DID NOT score or assemble the long cut-and-paste end credit sequence that appears in the film. It is an editorial sequence created during post production, drawn from many different cues that appear earlier in the film. Even engineer Bruce Botnick expressed this purely-editorial task to be a nightmarish attempt to keep up with changes in the length of the credit roll itself during post production. Making musical sense was secondary. And, no, we did not want to recreate it since ALL of the music appears elsewhere, in the sequences originally intended. The score does in fact close with a brief end title, actually more of a lengthy coda, and we stayed with what Goldsmith wrote. For those two or three aficionados that will possibly fuss - the movie is available on Blu-ray. :D

I will order this but I have to wait because just a few days before the "clue announcement" I did made a soundtrack order so when that package arrives then I`ll order Deep Rising, that`s a promise.

I'll be doing a 4 Goldsmith cd order in the foreseeable future, Sebastian, Night Crossing, Deep Rising and Psycho II. Just need to reload the bank account. I did place an order yesterday with the good folk at Intrada for Cocoon and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. (:) The elusive Quartet release at last is making its way to my collection and cd player.)

Great news. A fab album of the time but criminally short. Always loved the opening sequence of the boat and then seeing the ocean liner for the first time. Missed that as part of a soundtrack CD. Exhilarating scoring from the master. Thank you Intrada!

One of the guilty pleasure scores by JG: I love this one, really, and the original CD lacks of so much score!
Wooohooo!
What a year, what a year!

Thank you sooooo much! :D

This one is a fun thrill ride of both movie and music combined for an excellent popcorn movie.
Got this one on DVD back in the summer of 1998 as it never premiered at the movies where I come from and the one thing I loved the most was Goldsmiths fun and thrilling score to this monsterbash. I heard the Hollywood records CD but was saddened that so much was left out on that CD and now 15+ years later it finally gets its due out on a wonderful CD.
This is one that I can´t wait to put a spin on in my player and I do love the double cover and especially the one with that cruiseliner in the horizon.
I read that this was a tough CD to release (because of H.records??) but really hopes this will be the first and my fave Ghost and the Darkness is the next that is given the Intrada love :)

But for now lets us enjoy this wonderful release :D Thanx hamsters...

Ordered. Always liked this score (and the movie).
It is not "classic Goldsmith" but it is Goldsmith fun/action mode.

After listening to Jerry Goldsmith's complete "Deep Rising" on a great stereo system, I almost comsider "DR" a masterpiece. Perhaps not but it really is an excellent score enhanced by superb sound from Intrada. The score is riveting, powerful, and propulsive and just plane outstanding.
