| Post subject: | Godzilla "Perfect Collection" Box Sets |
I so far have boxes 1, 2, 5 and 6. I love them all and am trying to decide whether to go for box 3 or 4 next. I'm largely unfamiliar with the scores represented in boxes 3 and 4, and am interested to see if anyone here has a strong preference and why. |

The third box features the final 2 Showa film scores, Masaru Sato's catchy score to Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla and Ifukube's final score for the series, Terror of Mecha-Godzilla. Both are entertaining, although Ifukube's isn't the most original but it does feature a return to one of the original Godzilla themes. Sato's score is kind of a jazzy big band style at times. The other scores are hardly worth mentioning, Godzilla vs Gigan is basically a best of Ifukube as it features nothing but tracked music from a variety of films he scored. I would classify the other two as not worth the effort to listen to. Box 4 contains the first 4 Heisei films. The dark brooding score for Godzilla 1984 is a must have, Godzilla vs Biollante is a disappointment, the brass in the orchestra is weak and it tries too hard to be fantasy score. It features the original album concept, plus the isolated score in mono, with subtle bleed in of sound effects. Ifukube returns to score the next two, and while he recycles a lot from his earlier works, it's nice to hear them in stereo. I'd get box 5 first. |

Thank you very much for your take on it. I was worried that the scores in these two particular boxes would be a bit underwhelming overall for the price. Box 4 seems like a fairly good one, though. I've somehow never seen the 1984 Godzilla film. I'm rarely a completist, but I have already gone so far with these sets. |
