Post subject:  Rejected scores

Most composers at some time face the indignity of having a score they have slaved over for weeks being rejected by either the studio or director. The most celebrated of course being Bernard Herrmanns' TORN CURTAIN and Alex Norths' 2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY. If we're lucky we may get an 'official' release of these lost masterpieces. So my question to forum members is 'What REJECTED score would you love to see released or re-recorded?'

I'll start the ball rolling with my favourite unreleased score Gabriel Yareds' rejected score to TROY (I have managed to snaffle a very rare bootleg and it is in my opinion superior to James Horners' replacement)

Ennio Morricone's score for What Dreams May Come. (I do have a copy of the music, and it is beautiful, I'd love to see an official release.)

Most of the other rejected soundtracks I wanted to have, have actually been released. (Top of my list were a few years ago: Two Days in the Valley (Goldsmith) and Jennifer 8 (Jarre)) It'd be nice to see a more wider spread release for Lalo Schifrin's score for The Exorcist.

A release of River Wild featuring both Maurice Jarre's and Jerry Goldsmith's scores would be neat. :-)

I would like to like a proper release of Georges Delerue's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES.

Now this score was made available by Universal's Ecoutez Le Cinema label paired with another rejected Delerue score, REGARDING HENRY, but there were major issues.

The score was sourced from Delerue's archive and did not sound so great, and there's this jarring edit in one of the tracks that no soundtrack label would have ever allowed. Finally that release of the score only presented 30 minutes of the score which is essentially the meat of the score; a lot of the more atmospheric cues and source music were excluded.

Now there's an unmentionable out there that has far better sound quality and no jarring edit so....

Intrada has hinted that the original tapes exist and it would be really great if they could get this out soon considering that the replacement score was released in 2009 (it really should have been released along with the replacement score but it is what it is).

Here's hoping.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, really) many rejected scores have been bootlegged, which may
be the only way they'd ever be heard :(

I'm in for ANY, they are always fascinating, and often better than the used, or at worst acceptable.

The one I'd probably be most curious for is Goldsmith's THE PUBLIC EYE - which no one has heard
outside of the London (?) sessions. I still really love Isham's used score here, it's a great moody piece
that almost bridges his early synth writing with his later orchestral work.

I'd love to hear what Howard Shore composed for King Kong (2005).

Also I second the origal poster opinion and reques for an oficial release of Gabriel Yared's Troy.

I like Goldsmith's River Wild (and would love a complete release of the score), but also would like to have Jarre's rejected score for that one.

Also curious to hear what Alan Silvestri composed for Pirates of the Caribbean

I'll second Morricone's What Dreams May Come and Jarre's The River Wild.

I'm also very much interested in an unedited presentation of Delerue's Something Wicked from the original tapes.

In the category of not knowing the score but having a piqued curiosity, it would be nice to hear what Horner did for Romeo & Juliet.

Mission:Impossible (Alan Silvestri)
The most impressive rejected score I've ever heard. As far as my love for Danny Elfman goes, I find Silvestri's take on this one much superior.

Would love to see James Horner's Romeo and Juliet score see the light of day. From what I've read from the few who have heard it, it was pretty good. Horner hasn't been doing much lately other than that so I was real bummed when that was rejected.

If Charles Bernstein recorded any music for Serpent and the Rainbow.
I love the Brad Fiedel score but would be fun to hear what Bernstein would have done with it.
While on Fiedel, I HOPE that intrada vill visit his score to Gladiator (1992) and not reject that awesome score and only release Goldsmiths rejected piece...

I heard somewhere that Alan Silvestri was the original composer for the first POTC movie. Is this true, and did he actually write anything for it before getting rejected and replaced by Klaus Badelt's score?

Post subject:  Re: Rejected scores

Many of those already mentioned above would be neat to get released officially but if I had to chose an unused score that no one above already mentioned then my choice would be Randy Newman`s Air Force One. Actually it would be fun if someone could release an Air Force One box including Randy Newman`s unused score along with Jerry Goldsmith`s complete replacement score and Joel McNeely`s additional score, that would be awesome.
