INTRADA Announces:

TRANSFORMERS - THE MOVIE
Music Composed by VINCE DiCOLA
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 263

The Transformers: The Movie (1986) presented keyboardist-turned-composer Vince DiCola with the challenge of taking the rhythmic genre he loved into a new, futuristic dimension, using the same daring synergy that the makers of The Transformers’ TV show were using to broaden their brand name. DiCola truly fused progressive “arena rock” with alien technology to make The Transformers a stylistic whole, capturing the movie’s 2005 setting with its brightly futuristic synth sound. While Rocky IV had afforded him an orchestra, the budget of The Transformers necessitated an electronic approach. With the aid of co-producer Ed Fruge, programmer Casey Young, percussionist Michael Fisher and other first-call session musicians, DiCola stuffed the Scotti Brothers recording studio with Moog, Oberheim, Yamaha and EMU synthesizers and samplers. Initially working from storyboards and a plot synopsis, DiCola won the filmmakers over with a six-minute demo cue called “Legacy” that laid the seeds for his score, included here as a bonus.

The Transformers: The Movie has remained as rhythmically vibrant as ever for the franchise’s numerous fans. It has previously appeared on two quickly sold-out BotCon limited editions (“’Till All Are One” in 1997 and “Lighting Their Darkest Hour” in 2001). This Intrada CD marks the first generally available release of Vince DiCola’s complete score.

In 1986, it was decided that the best way to go into both a third season and a new product line was by giving the action figures a major cinematic upgrade with The Transformers: The Movie. The film’s sizable ambitions were embodied by Unicron, a machine-eating planet whose attack on the Transformer home world of Cybertron posed a singular threat to both Autobots and Decepticons. The movie noticeably went far beyond the TV show in its robot-shattering scale of destruction, “brutally” trashing numerous old characters to make way for a shinier new toy line that included Insectoids, Dinobots, Constructicons and jingle-spouting Junkticons.

Well uh...

That's different. The track list is very different from the one on the CD I have, and it SEEMS to missing some stuff (for instance, both tracks of Destruction of Moon Base Two) but yet the times do add up to almost the same when everything is added...plus the alternate Main Title is missing (which could have fit despite what some may think, though I can see there may have been license issues there).
If the 'Legacy' track weren't there it'd be an easy decision, as the sound seems basically the same...

Bah :?

Cheers Intrada for releasing this. I have the LTDH release but I will be picking this release up as well.

Also I was fairly sure it was Insecticons not Insectoids.

Btw anyone interested in this really should also pick up this medley track of Transformers movie music that Vince DiCola created for the Turrican Kickstarter album. It's a mix of orchestral, synth and electric guitar and I think it's a rather special interpratation of the music, I'd love to see him apply this approach to the whole album. I am mildly surprised it wasn't included in this new release.

-Edit to make it clearer that the track above is a medley do Transformers movie music.

Fantastic! I'm a HUGE fan of Vince DiCola, and this score in particular! That being the case, I already own the Botcon '97 score album, so I would be interested in any feedback anyone can provide on how these releases differ, in particular if there is a noticeable sound quality upgrade for this release. I also notice the total run time is slightly less for the Intrada album, and the track listing/track assemblies appear to be quite different. My assembly consisting of the Botcon '97 album, the alternate title song performed by Stan Bush, and the three score tracks from the commercial soundtrack release that were not included on the Botcon album rounds out to an 83 minute runtime. I notice the alt title song is absent (which I assume that is due to licensing) which accounts for 2:42 seconds, so that only leaves an approximately 2 minute discrepancy.

Anyway, I don't intend to sound like I'm nitpicking. I'm extremely happy this soundtrack is getting an official release, so I may just pick it up anyway to support both Intrada and DiCola. I'm just curious about additional technical details.

As I said above, they sound basically the same to me, though I have the 2001 album.

I ordered this yesterday along with ROCKY IV, I can't wait to receive them! I'm not to familiar with TRANSFORMERS, but really enjoy DiCola's ROCKY IV and TRANSFORMERS samples. Thanks Intrada.

I finally got around to hearing this last night and had a blast. I never had any of the BotCon albums and I've only seen the movie once many years ago, so experiencing the entire score with this album was especially cool. DiCola is a real class act.

Thanks very much, Doug, for producing and releasing the official release of this score! I've been a fan of it since I saw the movie as a kid in '86 and sought out the original LP. There was never enough score included on that LP so when the score was available as a Botcon exclusive in '97 I tracked down a copy as well. And even I bought the 20th anniversary CD from Sony when it was released, as I was very curious about the suites of extra score cues prepared by Vince DiCola.

Now, with the Intrada version, I consider this the best version of the full score. Your sequencing is tops and your suite arrangement of the shorter cues is what I was hoping for. Placing the music for the destruction of Moon Base 2, titled "Destroy The Matrix", later in sequence works to spread out the various presentations of Unicron's theme, so it's not all bunched up together earlier. Plus it allows DiCola's "danger motif" to appear in this track, then open the following track, "The Trial". The lengthy "Decepticon Attack" track is a marvelous suite presentation of those final cues underscoring the Junkion planet sequence, seeing as how they had to work around the "Dare To Be Stupid" song placement as well.

Excellent job all around!
