Someone posted this link on how LPs are made over at FSM. What I find funny is the discussion of what dynamic range is and that the conductor decides the dynamic range and how the engineers are hands off! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otR-MGsm ... r_embedded

I am new to this discussion, having recently had the concept of so-called brick-walling brought to my attention by Roger in a thread over at the FSM Message Board.

I would like to suggest a thread be started where we can compile a list of soundtrack releases that suffer from this problem, for the benefit of thosr that wish to be informed.

I understand that this topic is controversial, and some may get riled up by my suggestion, but I'm sure there are many who would find a resource like this useful.

Any comments?

It obviously depends on what one is looking for. There will always be lots of people who like the modern trends of heavy noise reduction, cookie-cutter EQ and significant dynamic compression. I find that the more celebrated the mastering engineer, the more likely they are to utilize these measures to appease the masses.

As far as expanded soundtrack albums, some have disappointed me but plenty of others sound great. I take it case-by-case.

Are there any recent examples of expansions that have been brickwalled in the mastering stage, or has this unfortunate trend finally come to an end?
