In recent threads, both Doug and Roger have given us some cool "behind the scenes" info regarding the production of CDs. Doug has talked about the technical challenges of taking older recording formats and converting them to newer digital formats as well as describing various associated costs in putting out CDs. Roger has described legal licensing hurdles and the amount of time it takes just to get CDs available for purchasing by the public. In that vein, I was wondering if either of these gentleman could address how studios go about deciding which movies and TV shows will be archived in "pristine" condition. For example, with the recent Buck Rogers "Volume One", it seems the individual episode scores were preserved in excellent condition, but the complete pilot/movie score for "Awakening" is missing in action. Is there any rhyme or reason as to how studios treat their music scores? Thanks in advance for any info on this topic. |

He's probably referring to the film studio side of things. Roger mentioned that just the MCA album elements exist, which I presume were acquired through UMG while the Universal film studio has nothing that would allow an expanded release of the pilot that some apparently want. |

Thanks so much for the detailed description! ![]() I've been dying for a peek into what the "locating process" is like, for what feels like a long time now. It sounds like the image I had in my head was vaguely accurate all along, but I had no idea the labeling could be so cryptic! Wow... |

This candid account certainly increases my appreciation for what you guys do. The whole process just seems so daunting that I would probably somewhat tire of this hobby if I were in the business and was as prolific as Intrada. It also points to just how lucky we are in how much film and television music has survived over the decades. |

This is very interesting. By the way -- like many others here I presume -- I always particularly enjoy the "tech talk from the CD producer" part of the Intrada booklets (the FSM recordings usually feature a similar section). Very interesting to read about the issues that were faced and the technical or creative decisions that were made while assembling the recording. |

Fascinating! I don't know why but I guess I assumed there were canisters sitting around somewhere with "long lost original tapes of the Psycho sessions" written on them, just sitting in a warehouse ready to be picked up and turned into Intrada discs! |
