In the lead now with two votes -- is Rachel Portman. I think I discovered her with USED PEOPLE (1992), a charming and neglected film for which her original cues are wonderful. I was very happy to see her get an Oscar for EMMA (1996); but while my favorite of hers is SIRENS (1994), close on that one are THE CIDER HOUSE RULES (1999) and the soaring WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD (1991). Anyone who likes Portman but hasn't heard all of those should try them; they were all on CD. And while I don't know her for anything else, the DVD (and laserdisc) of the 1927 Douglas Fairbanks Sr. adventure THE GAUCHO contains a delightful, feature-length score by a Sydney Jill Lehman. |

My favorite score by a woman composer is American History X - but I do hold War Of The Buttons really high as well, so maybe I will just call it a tie between Anne Dudley and Rachel Portman. --Doug |

Anne Dudley. I particularly like the score she did for Buster (1987) |
