Guys, I know you are good upstanding citizens and would not be interested in supporting a business that is not on the level. I don't usually discuss upcoming projects, as you know, but I have spent considerable amount of time unraveling some legal tangles on Craig Safan's MISSION OF THE SHARK and finally got clearance from all interested parties last week -- just in time to see Perseverance scooped out three tracks and put them on a promo that is unlicensed. This will not impact our project because we intend to release the entire score paired with another Safan score, but I am really frustrated to see this complete disregard for the rules when I worked pretty hard to get this one cleared.

Oh man, that's pretty low of Perseverance to do that. I hope it doesn't affect your plans on releasing this score paired with the other planned score, Roger.

It does not. We're staying the course.

As a loyal Craig Sa-"fan" and Intrada fan, you can count on me to support that release and not the other one... :D

I would never let an unlicensed sampler CD (or any sampler CD for that matter) like that "promo" keep me from buying a properly licensed and full release that has undergone professional attention.

It's nice to know that you will be releasing Mission of the Shark. I will be overjoyed if a proper release of Corvette Summer ever becomes available.

No idea what 'Shark' is, but love Safan's work, and the fact you are pursuing
this, Roger - got a sale here, sho nuff'.

Lukas Kendall posted an interesting take on this promo over at FSM http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/p ... &archive=0

Didn't they release Slipstream? We all know how that turned out. Don't worry Roger/Doug, your release is the one to go for.

Speaking of Safan, any chance of The Last Starfighter being re-issued?

He tried to pull a fast one with CHARMED earlier this year while we were in negotiations with CBS on the damn project. Luckily we stopped the release in its tracks before his bootleg copy got out there.

Fight the good fight, Roger!

How is he allowed to continue working on film score releases if he keeps doing it all wrong and illegally?

Robin Esterhammer's days are numbered. Where he once may have had noble intentions, the soundtrack licensing industry has changed and he has become quite dishonorable. Deplorably so. I look forward to the day his tent folds and will be happy to assist in bringing it down.

Well said TNF & i too support the proper future release of Mission of the Shark along with the other Craig score, fingers crossed for Corvette.

Looks like I've been good in boycotting Persevearance (I still have Lock Ness from way back when, though, granted). Remember what happened with Rain Man too, the sound quality is so horrid it's hard to believe it was from a legit source.

I wonder what the chances are for another label eventually releasing that score from ideal elements devoid of the extreme distortion present on the current album. Probably very slim.

Roger: It looks like Safan authorized this release.... so shouldn't part of your anger be towards him?

Not at all. I've had plenty of composers come to me with projects they want to do, but I've never had a composer look over my shoulder to make sure I've got all the proper clearances in place. That's not their job...they just trust I know how this business operates. MGM has generally been supportive of promotional releases and probably would have been happy to license those tracks to Robin (or possibly more likely told him they were already being released so he should focus on something different). But he didn't even ask them. Just because you're not charging for something doesn't give you the right to distribute someone else's IP.
