I was flipping through a 1992 edition of Starlog that has a review of ET by Alan Dean Foster. Towards the end he comments on John Williams' score. I found this line amusing: "Williams can also write a melody, something many film composers seem to have forgotten in their hasty search for startling new sounds."

This was back in 1982. Alan Dean Foster -- you had NO idea.

Maybe he was just refering to the pre-Star Wars scores and all those avant-garde 70's scores for SF and Fantasy that were lacking so much of a melody.
