INTRADA Announces: DREAMSCAPE Composed by MAURICE JARRE INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 248 Although composer Maurice Jarre was well into his electronic scoring by 1984, none of his earlier efforts carried the wild musical imagination of Dreamscape. While producer Bruce Cohn Curtis (Hell Night) may have hired Jarre expecting the kind of rapturous symphonic score that the composer had provided for such films as Doctor Zhivago, he surprised with an electric-acoustical and altogether surreal soundtrack that was no less lavish, exciting or romantic. Jarre’s stylistic choice likely far better embodied a high-tech trip into the subconscious than if the music had been performed with a full orchestra. Jarre approached many of his electronic scores in traditionally notated fashion, but Dreamscape stands out for its level of improvisation. The composer collaborated on the score with longtime keyboardist and orchestrator Michel Mention and recordist, mixer, programmer, performer and source songwriter Craig Huxley, whose fascination with the instrumental state of the art contributed significantly to the score’s futuristic sound. Instead of producing music that would impress merely with its experimental strangeness, however, Jarre, Mention and Huxley made a concentrated effort to create a “dreamscape” conjured from distinctive themes and motifs, an approach that gave even their most avant-garde musical sound effects a melodic component. For this release, Intrada has remastered the album masters used for the original Sonic Atmosphere release from the 80s, punching up the sound using today's technology. In Dreamscape, Roguish hero Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid) only uses his paranormal talents on the racetrack until he encounters his old mentor, Dr. Paul Novotny (Max von Sydow). The doctor has developed a machine that links sleepers to the psychically gifted, a bridge from which the psychic can repair a subject’s inner torment. Chief among the nightmare-afflicted is the U.S. president (Eddie Albert), who sees his apocalyptic visions as a sign for nuclear disarmament. But that won’t happen under the right-wing watch of his reptilian security chief, Bob Blair (Christopher Plummer), who hopes to use his own psychotic psychic, Tommy Ray (David Patrick Kelly), to slay the commander-in-chief while he’s dreaming—therefore assassinating him in real life. Outrunning Blair’s men with the aid of the beautiful researcher Jane (Kate Capshaw), Alex engages in a final dream duel to stop Blair’s sinister plans from proving catastrophic in the waking world. I love synth scores so this is right up my alley. Never owned the previous release either so this was an easy purchase. Fantastic cover art as well. Thanks Intrada! |

Awol= missing gone I forget the exact acronym. Its pretty much complete anyway. Thanks for remastering guys, ballsy move for such a hated title. ...there are those of us that appreciate it & are fond of this score, because of & despite its quirkiness. |

I still have the original release of this, but I'm upgrading, because that old CD suffers from very, very tinny sound. Glad to have this one on the way! |

"While producer Bruce Cohn Curtis (Hell Night) may have hired Jarre expecting the kind of rapturous symphonic score that the composer had provided for such films as Doctor Zhivago, he surprised with an electric-acoustical and altogether surreal soundtrack that was no less lavish, exciting or romantic." Is that so easy to convince filmakers to change so radicaly the aproach of a score? |

The sound on this release is actually much, much better than on the original release. Thanks, Intrada! It was worth it for the upgrade. |

Thanks for confirming that Robin - I'm chomping to order this with the new Monday Intrada's ![]() I know that when the Sonic Atmosphere's album pops up on my ipod, I have to jack the volume WAY up ![]() Love the detailed electronic orchestration and crazy sounds Jarre used here - even if one doesn't think the music is award worthy, you have to love the sheer sonics he used and how much work it must've been, writing for just a couple players. I'm not sure if this was an overdubby score or played live, as Jarre usually did with his synth ensemble works, hopefully the notes will touch on that. Oh, and that love theme....just gorgeous...... |

The love theme is great! I was bouncing between “Love Dreams” and “Endless Dreams” on the way to work yesterday! |
