I realize that giving a lot of thought to "what ifs" is a big waste of time but sometimes after watching a film with a less than steller score I can't help myself. For those who enjoy synth scores you are going to disagree with me and I understand that completely. I am not wanting to argue about merits of the use of synth scores pro or con. I simply want to give an example of one of my personal "What ifs". The film is the "The Bounty" the very well done (IMHO) remake of the classic story starry Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. I realize that synth scores were plentiful in the 80's and the composer was very popular at the time. That being said, It's not hard to imagine that he was chosen to do the score, I just think it's a shame. I think of all the Great composers that were still alive at the time and what wonderful orchestral music could have been created for this film. I have to believe that this genre and story line would make most composers mouth water for chance to score the film. I wonder what Goldsmith, Addison, Bennett, Barry, Delerue or many others could have done if given the job. Oh, well "we now return you to your regularly scheduled reality already in progress". If you have any "What ifs" Please give an example |

The Onion Field; Whose idea was it to hire Eumir Deodato to compose the score? Elmer Bernstein or Jerry Goldsmith would have worked wonders with that film. Deodato is one groovin' mother but dramatic film scoring is not his calling. |
