I thought I'd bump this really old thread of mine too, now that Paramount is open, since it is the Trek score most in need of a reissue after Star Trek V. The question is, did GNP Crescendo buy the rights to Treks 7-9 in perpetuity, and if so how is Neil Norman to deal with in getting the rights?

Another great topic to discuss. Thanks again Yavar. Hopefully Mr. Norman will be open and flexible. A new Trek movie score every year sounds good to me. I may not purchase it right away but I'm sure these revised sdtks will be around for a while.

Thanks for letting us know Dennis wants it too, Ford. Can I assume you agree with me that a new release is important not just because of the superb unreleased music but because the sound on the original was pretty poor? Not sure what happened but it doesn't sound like the score in the film at all -- it's just weak, and I think it has unfortunately contributed to the reputation this score has of being weak.

Although not the best of the Trek scores, this one does get a bad rap.

I think the real issue is not the quality of the score, but simply the style, which very much keys into the TNG style of scoring, sounding to some like "sonic wallpaper" the way Rick Berman essentially dictated.

It is a very good score, and absolutely appropriate for Generations.

I agree that it gets a bad rap. I'd go further to say that McCarthy breaks free of the sonic wallpaper style of the TNG television series with Generations. It's got some stuff that really sparkles, like the aforementioned Christmas Nexus music and the Picard/Kirk horse ride sequence. Love the Alexander Courage quote with the bottle smash on the hull too.
