A few days ago I recieve an email from the storage facility in Ohio where my belongings consisting of thousands of LPs, couple thousand CDs, handful of 16mm films are stored. The email said the lock on my unit "appears to have been tampered with". Spent an uncomfortable night waiting to call the place next morning when they opened. The idiot on the phone was very nervous and vague, said they didn't break it open, just tried and failed. The people at the storage facility had to cut the lock in order to repair the damaged door, she said. I asked for and was denied some photos sent to my email. I'm 2500 miles away and need to know what's going on. Not until I called the main office and raised some hell were some photos sent. Luckily it looks as if nothing was stolen, some boxes seem to have been thrown around. I asked if multiple units were affected or just my own. Others were vandalized as well, she wouldn't tell me how many and was very nervously acting as if it was none of my business. Wanted to go off on the bitch but played it cool. Talking to an insurance investigator a few days age he told me multiple units were broken into, "More than 50..., he said, it was pretty bad. Looks like they went from door to door". So here I am 2500 miles away on the other side of the fuckin' country, come Thursday I'm flying back for a few days to file a police report and check for loss or damage. I will then move everything from that place to a more secured and protected location. Had I not been able to see from those photos that everything appears to be intact other than a few boxes and a computer tossed around I would really be on edge about it all right now. I called the police and asked if the people at the storage facility had notified them about what happened, woman on the phone checked and said she sees no record on any calls to that location. I'm wondering if some sort of class action lawsuit could be filed. I'm the last person who can afford the thousand dollars it's going to cost to deal with this thing. Not asking for legal advice here, just thinking about what recourse I might possibly have. |

I feel your anger and frustration in this matter. I had lost movie memorabilia, comic books, and hundreds of science fiction books and magazines stored in my sister's and father's houses after Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately, my film, literature, and mystery books, along with my music collection (LPs, tapes, and cds) are here with me. I have taken photographs of what I have along with a list that I wrote in Pdf on my pc and flash drive for insurance purposes. Basically, when all is said and done, any money that the insurance company would pay is a mere pittance compared to what you have collected over the years. When it comes to collectables, get a written estimate from a dealer who would give you a realistic price or from an auction house. If you do discover stolen items, let us know and I'm sure many of us would send you copies (If I can say that on this board). All the best. JP |

Strange thing is, the night before I recieved the email about the break in I had a dream about my 16mm print of Bride Of Frankenstein. In this dream I found myself inside an abandoned movie theatre, I walked up a flght of narrow stairs to the projection room and find it all intact including a really nice 16mm projector ready to go and bottles of a film lubrication substance called VitaFilm. I made plans to go back to the place with my print of Bride Of Frankenstein in order to project it on the huge screen in the dark theatre. Luckily none of the films were touched and have since been relocated to a much more secure facility for safekeeping until I win the lotto and buy Dino D's old place in Milan. |
