Elmer Bernstein's lush and exciting score for the 1964 Paramount Pictures' film The Carpetbaggers is dominated by his main theme for anti-hero Jonas Cord. In its most common setting, tuba and trombones relentlessly churn out propulsive rhythms for the character's drive and ambition, while above, a swaggering melody captures his sublime arrogance and devil-may-care attitude. This is the score's most versatile theme, and Bernstein puts it through numerous variations -- adding sleazy color with sax or clarinet, changing up the rhythm, dropping out notes, and developing new ideas from its melodic fragments throughout.

For this special presentation of Elmer Bernstein's dynamic music from The Carpetbaggers, Intrada was fortunate to locate not only the complete print takes from the soundtrack scoring sessions stored on 35mm elements in the Paramount vaults and newly transferred for this project, but also the album masters for the 1964 LP that Bernstein re-recorded for the Ava label. The original sessions are making their official premiere release in any format here; this is the first appearance of the LP masters on CD. Everything heard here is in crisp, detailed stereo.

The Carpetbaggers stars George Peppard as Jonas Cord, a young millionaire industrialist and movie mogul with a reckless penchant for planes and dames. Cord's oldest friend and surrogate father is Nevada Smith, a gunslinger-turned-actor and their relationship sits at the film's heart. Both men use and exploit one another; but when Cord finally hits bottom after a long spiral of personal destruction, only Smith is left to expose his true face -- a feat accomplished with fists as much as words.

Not much to say other than that this is a very cool album with fantastic 60s stereo sound, especially on the re-recording.

The Carpetbaggers was my first ever soundtrack LP, they don't come much better, this CD release is a dream come true...makes me think there's no limit to what Intrada can do, you guys are the best, thank you sincerely. Ordered!

Lemme re-state what I posted on the FSM board- Effing awesome!

Now here's an example where the album version is very welcome -- re-recording and fills up the CD rather than making it an extra one. No doubt I will buy this one. This has to be one of the most 'active' scores I've heard in a while (though this may be just be the choices in the sound samples...)

From the bottom of my heart: thank you to everyone at Intrada for this release. The original lp was among the first I ever purchased as a kid (with lawn mowing money) -- and it was one that started my lifelong admiration for the art of film scoring. This Bernstein effort has always been among my top favorites -- the score adds so much forward momentum and psychological excitement to the film. Simply wonderful stuff. Wow. I am sort of speechless. It has been an extremely difficult week for me personally -- and seeing the announcement of this release made my heart skip and brought a smile to my face. Thank you again.

THE CARPETBAGGERS was a HUGE box-office hit; one of the top 5 grossers of the year.
George Peppard became a big star off of this hit film but never duplicated its success.

Excellent CD. I really prefer all the source music dropped in where the cues belong as opposed to having a bunch of cues at the end of the disc. So I'm very happy with this CD. The score ain't too shabby, either. Just a great job all around.

Absolutely superb score, and the love theme is one of Bernstein's finest, gorgeous.

This is an excellent release all-around and is sure to become one of my favorites of this year. The rich sounding and wonderfully performed re-recording alone is worth the price.

We are extremely lucky that the original elements for the film tracks were found last minute. It was also interesting to see in the notes that the flawless Ava album master came from the UMG vaults; I was curious from the beginning to know where it was located.
