On Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 1 pm pst the following soundtracks will be released by La-La Land Records: THE SHOOTIST/THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER MUSIC BY ELMER BERNSTEIN LLLCD 1254 LIMITED EDITION OF 2000 UNITS ... RETAIL PRICE: $19.98 PRODUCED BY NEIL S. BULK and LUKAS KENDALL MASTERED BY DOUG SCHWARTZ LINER NOTES BY JEFF BOND ART DIRECTION BY DAN GOLDWASSER Saddle up and head on out West for a terrific John Wayne twofer… La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures are proud to announce the CD debuts of Elmer Bernstein’s classic scores to THE SHOOTIST and THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER. For THE SHOOTIST, this CD presents the score for the first time in its original form, mastered from ¼ʺ stereo mixes. As for THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER Elmer Bernstein re-recorded and arranged his music from the film for a Columbia Records soundtrack LP released along with the film. The soundtrack album includes adaptations of film cues, sometimes combining two or more into a single track, while other selections begin with music from the film but continue as extended arrangements of specific melodies—which receive more play and development than in the actual film score. Included in this release is the title song performed by Johnny Cash as well as the John Wayne narration. As an added bonus we have also included a version of the title song performed by Ernie Sheldon that was released as a rare single back when the film came out. Sadly nothing of the original score has survived but luckily the fine folks at SONY MUSIC discovered the original master tapes for the Katie LP. Booklet has nice reversible cover design by Dan Goldwasser -- Shootist on one side and Katie Elder on the other. https://www.facebook.com/lalalandrecords |

The Shootist is quite the consolation for the missing original Katie Elder tapes. To many people's delight, it is the year of Elmer Bernstein. |

Yes, especially since the album had such varying sound quality (why was the orchestra in mono during the choral parts?). |

The Shootist is an unusually poignant film. John Wayne – more than a beloved actor, a true icon – played an ageing gunfighter dying of cancer; and while it was not known at the time for sure that it would be his last film, it was widely known that he was in ill health and his life was coming to its end. The parallels between the actor and his character, J.B. Books, were obvious. For my money the film drew one of the actor’s very finest performances and, while it didn’t do much business at the time, is probably the best film he made after the masterpiece The Searchers........ |
