Post subject:  Your favorite (unexpanded) pre-Special Collection Intradas?

A lot of newer people active on the forums today don't remember the days (not *all* that long ago) before Intrada changed their strategy to focus on their new limited-edition Special Collection and later Signature Editions. I think it was inspired by the success of Lukas Kendall's Film Score Monthly series and perhaps the reborn Varese Club. Now almost everything comes out in this line, with only the occasional MAF (or unlimited) title, like Conan, First Blood, Alien, or The Wind and the Lion. But once, Intrada was more like Varese, releasing a greater percentage of scores to more contemporary films, often in similar 30-35 minute album programs due to the same prohibitive re-use fees that resulted in similar Varese albums.

Though most of these titles are long out of print, there are even still a few remnants of this system (perhaps ones they kept the rights to in perpetuity rather than for a finite amount of years?) still in stock in the Main Catalog section of their store: Cliff Eidelman's Magdalene, Basil Poledouris's Love and Treason, and of course their older re-recordings (the two Rozsas and one Herrmann cond. Bruce Broughton, and of course the superb Rio Conchos with Goldsmith conducting the LSO -- actually their last in-print RVF title rather than the more familiar MAF).

When I started collecting over ten years ago as a teenager, I bought many more wonderful titles from them, now out of print and some very hard to find for a decent price: Peter (with Elmer) Bernstein's The Rough Riders, Bruce Broughton's Shadow Conspiracy and Carried Away, Christopher Young's Judicial Consent and Flowers in the Attic, Robert Folk's In the Army Now, David Shire's Last Stand at Sabre River, and one of my absolute favorites, Craig Safan's magnum opus, Son of the Morning Star.

I was just wondering what some other people's favorites were, of the "old Intrada" titles.

A good number of them (probably ones recorded outside the AFM) were actually lengthy and probably contained the complete scores (ie. Stone's The Stupids or Folk's Beastmaster 2). A number of others Intrada has since revisited and released "definitive" complete versions: Rent-A-Cop, Tomstone, Silverado, The Wind and the Lion, etc. Or they've been taken up by other labels: Extreme Prejudice, Not Without My Daughter, Quigley Down Under, King Solomon's Mines. But many more I think could use a facelift and shouldn't be overlooked because they were already released before; with the new AFM rules in place they are open to expansion just like the above titles.

So my question for this forum is two-fold: 1) What are your favorites of the "old Intrada" titles (irrespective of whether you feel they could be improved upon)? and 2) What ones of those would you be most happy about Intrada revisiting?

For me it would have to be the grails that got away :(
And therefore in no particular order.

Lionheart (A.W.O.L.): John Scott
Critters: David Newman
Delta Force: Alan Silvestri
Toy Soldiers: Robert Folk

So i would very much like these to be revisited, even if they were only to have a fewer run next time around.
My dollars are stacked & ready.

Lionheart by John Scott is probably my favorite of Intrada's old releases. I am fortunate to have that one. It is a perfect action score as an album; full of brilliant melodies and addictive rhythms, all anchored by an amazing main theme loaded with variation.

This one has got to be re-released someday and reach a wider audience, if only because I'm sure many would consider it to be one of John Scott's absolute finest works.

Great thread! I really enjoy Broughton's Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, Kiner's Leprechaun, and of course Folk's Toy Soldiers. But if I had to pick an ultimate favorite, I'd vote for Young's Flowers in the Attic--just an incredibly touching, heart-wrenching score. :)

My three favourites of oldie's but goldie's from the Intrada catalogue is:

THE BARBARIANS - Composed by Pino Donaggio
The CD is great as is and does not need any improvement.
The Album contains the most important cues if not all.
One of my favourite Main Title themes of all time.

TOY SOLDIERS - Composed by Robert Folk
One of my favourite 90's action scores along with Poledouris' UNDER SIEGE II.
Relentless action motifs blended with a heroic heartfelt main theme,,, Best of both worlds if you ask me.
The existing CD also contains the important cues plus sound great...
but if by some miracle Intrada rereleases this score remastered I'm there like a starving dog on a bone.... Yep it's that good.

WARLOCK - Composed by Jerry Goldsmith
This is one of the few good old Intrada releases that I think could be improved.
Especially in the artwork department, the silva release had a better cover design.
One of Jerry's best ventures into horror if you ask me... and the movie isn't that bad either.

HEART OF DARKNESS (Bruce Broughton)

I loved so much the score in the video game (I believe this was the very first completely orchestral video game score of all times) that I began to rip all the music that I could on my computer, to be able to listen again and again to it. And one day, I learnt about Intrada's release and I just ordered it immediatly at my CDs store (this was pre-internet area). I was so glad when they received it, I just kept playing it endlessly. It is still today my favorite soundtrack from Broughton and my favorite video game soundtrack ever !

Creature From The Black Lagoon (A Symphony Of Film Music By Hans J. Salter)

I could go for a complete CFTBL disc as well as a definitive Incredible Shrinking Man.

Great topic! Two masterpieces pop up in my mind:

I still regularly listen to Jarre's Night Of The Generals. It was a short album so Intrada mixed their own suit of the themes at the end, a nice touch. It makes a change to listening to the tracks one after another.

One of my favourites is Craig Safan's The Last Starfighter. I love the way the main theme is played both as a heroic fanfare and a whistful contemplative piece. A great slice of post-Star Wars adventuresome fun!

Yeah, I think new issues of The Last Starfighter and Night Crossing are probably the most in-demand...though of course I'd love ANY expanded Bruce Broughton, Robert Folk, or Chris Young score. The Hans Salter is a cool mention/suggestion too!

Far off Place would deserve a reissue as the previous album (probably a decade OOP) barely covers 1/2 of the score and comes first to mind.
Magdalene of course is close second and Shogun Mayeda taking 3rd spot.

In the Army Now is a good candidate too, considering how TERRIBLE that CD sounds.
