In 1990, composer Basil Poledouris teamed up with long time collaborator, director John Milius (Conan, Red Dawn) to score the Paramount Pictures film Flight of the Intruder. Stylistically, the score contains military themes and action as one would expect, but surprisingly turns into more poignant, sad territory, reflecting the internal conflicts of the on-screen characters. Although it has a typical Poledouris theme, a rousing call-to-arms motif, the overall feeling is muted, conflicted, and, like the film, utterly at odds with itself. And it features one of the last major works by Poledouris to make its appearance on CD.

For this premiere release, Intrada presents the score from the 1/2" three-channel mixes stored at Paramount, presenting the score in a clean, crisp and complete light. As an added bonus, the album includes the trailer music composed by John Beal.

Adapted from a novel by Stephen Coonts, Flight of the Intruder is a saga of Navy A-6 “Intruder” pilots, flying dangerous missions across Vietnamese enemy lines from deep-lying ocean carriers. Jake Grafton (Brad Johnson), a hot-shot pilot, is gung-ho for action until his co-pilot is killed on a mission. His attitude toward war changes as a result and he begins to question himself, authority, the nature of battle. Hanging with dissolute veteran Virgil Cole (Willem Dafoe) helps foster and deepen his cynicism regarding the “correctness” of what they are doing.

I haven't seen this movie in a long time and do not remember much of anything about its music. The samples sound like the powerful action music that Poledouris did so well in writing.

When I previewed the track 16 "The Rescue" I almost thought that I had pressed play on Jay Chattaway's Main Title to MANIAC COP.

The audio quality is audiophile grade in every way. Cymbals and other percussion instruments cannot sound any more crisp, and the synths are perfectly mixed. The score itself is lively and very accessible, and while not among his very best as an album, comes recommended for fans of Poledouris' orchestral/synth hybrids.

Getting an expanded The Hunt for Red October with audio quality nearly this good will have many people jumping for joy.
