THE BEST SCORES OF 2012

It's that time of year again. Cinematic Sound Radio is proud the present the very best scores of 2012. However, I'm going to reveal them a little differently this time around. For the next 10 working days I will unveil one score per day until I get to the number one score of 2012 on Friday, January 25th.

And for the very first time this year I'll be presenting 11 scores on the countdown. There was just so much good music released this year that I had a hard time condensing the final list down to my traditional 10 best.

The countdown begins with the two scores tied for 10th. Alexandre Desplat's RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and Frederic Wiedmann's GREEN LANTERN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. Click on the link below to have a listen.

Alexandre Desplat (pronounce "Deh-plah") is a great choice. I haven't watched the movie, so I hadn't heard the score he wrote for Rise of the Guardians, but it seems like a pretty neat adventure score. Thank you for the discovery !

About The Green Lantern, I have really hard times when a composer tries to emulate a real orchestra with synthesizers samples. It always sounds fake to my ears and reminds me of the latest hollywood bland action scores from Remote Control. I'm sure the composer put all his passion into it, but liking it would encourage producers to continue replacing the real orchestra with samples and I don't like the idea. Let's get back to the time (the 80's) where the synthesizer was a very creative tool to produce cool new sounds like Jerry Goldsmith did in his time !

Maybe there are several pronunciations allowed but usually the french don't pronounce the t and the s at the end of the words "des" and "plat". This is maybe an exception, but any french would spontaneously pronounce his name without the t and the s.

Warner Bros isn't a poor studio. They have used an orchestra for DC animated series in the past (Batman, Superman) and I don't see why it couldn't be done anymore today. The reuse fees are even lower than they used to be at that time.
I don't expect the composer to do anything about it. It's not his fault. But I prefer to put my money into Batman TAS Lalaland discs.
