I got my copy of The Star Chamber by Small that I am listening to it now: very low-key and powerful. Oddly, the theme and the character played by Hal Holbrook remind a film directed ten years earlier: Magnum Force. |

I only knew THE DRIVER and I always thought it's an excellent gangster film. It's a long time ago and I wished the score would make it on an album one day. The miracle happened. I own the copy just a couple of days now and I hadn't much time to listend to this important Small CD. It's easy to say that I prefer it from a long distance to BLACK WIDOW as a listening experience. What a brave release by Intrada (and I don't mind that it's been limited of 1200 copies only, knowing it should be around for a while). THE STAR CHAMBER is the music i like best. It's more dramatic and dark than THE DRIVER, less dated too, a sound that I truly miss in today's thrillers. From time to time Howard Shore comes near to this now mostly deserted field of film scoring. I miss Michael Small's voice in cinema. |
