Laurence Rosenthal’s score for BRASS TARGET in my opinion is a great score only the 70’s could bring us – it’s pessimistic, gritty in his suspence and action orientated moments and has one of that melancholic love themes (for Sophia Loren) that are a standout. The score in tone is comparable with Jerry Goldsmith’s score for THE CASSANDRA CROSSING – same gritty, pessimistic musical atmoshere and also a melancholic main theme (once again with Sophia Loren). Rosenthal’s score for BRASS TARGET comes as close as a score can get to Jerry Goldsmith’s typical mid/late 70’s scoring style in this genre. As this marvellous score so far only was released on LP by Varese a long time ago, I may ask, if it is possible to get this score for a proper CD release one day to preserve it digitally? As the MGM movie is owned by Warner Brothers, I guess a CD release is possible. I think the time has come for a CD release. Dear Mr. Fake, can this score released by your Intrada label one day, or does Varese Sarabande hold the rights because of their LP? |

I mention this quite a bit. I think the score is marvelous. With the Laurence Rosenthal history with Intrada, I too, would hope they would release this great score. However... the Varese Encore series could also possibly release it (it was a Varese title at first)??? Not sure where the rights are now for it, but the music is superb and should get another lease on life. Think I will break out my lp and play it today. |

We need a cheat sheet to inform us on what scores Varese retains the rights to. ![]() |

It looks like you'll have to hassle Mr. Townson for this release, but must first crack the Townson Code in order to reach him. Lukas' response to your thread on the FSM Forum: "I asked about this at WB ages ago and Varese has the soundtrack rights in perpetuity. It would be a great Club release." |

Yes, this is another project that Varese has tied up the rights with yet appears to have little interest in releasing. But they're pretty cool people. Just write to them and ask about this one. And maybe ask again and again until it happens 'cause Roger and I want to see it come out, too. (And so does Larry.) --Doug P.S. I doubt it would be an "Encore" release since it hasn't yet had a CD release anywhere. More likely just a Club release... which still works for me! |

I'd imagine that they're pretty busy with all of the recent scores, which I'm glad they are doing because we get very nice releases like Folk's There Be Dragons, Horner's Black Gold & For Greater Glory, and William Ross' works. That said, it'd be nice if they would license out some of the older scores to a label like Intrada. The market for these older scores is only dwindling as time goes by. |

A re-release of Mussolini: The Untold Story would be welcome. |

I really hope that BRASS TARGET by Laurence Rosenthal is in Varese's next Club CD batch. This is a great 70's score which had a Varese LP release decades ago. And it would be a great hommage to Laurence Rosenthal, who according to Intrada's Douglass Fake also would like a CD release of his marvellous score (of course Douglass Fake and Lukas Kendall want it to be released on CD too). |
