When composer Jerome Moross was hired to score the 1959 Paramount Pictures' film The Jayhawkers, he had just scored his first Hollywood hit with his Oscar-nominated music for The Big Country and was thus a logical choice. His unique Americana sound, with its mostly pentatonic melodies, rhythmic impetus and plain-spoken diatonic harmony, made Moross a perfect foil for the darker undercurrents of the story. Moross’ open-hearted, life-affirming music emphasized the good in the film's two adversaries/friends, leading the audience to empathize with both men in spite of their sometimes malevolent actions. One could even argue that it is an incongruous use of music -- Moross scoring The Jayhawkers with rousing, almost exclusively major-mode music, though his exciting themes played under what were essentially violent, destructive raids on innocent towns by outlaws preceding the Civil War.

To bring the complete soundtrack to CD, Intrada was given access to Paramount Pictures’ 35mm three-channel scoring session masters, transferred in the 1990s to 2’’ analogue protection tape. Most of the score is presented here in stereo, with three cues coming from the mono music stems. The 35mm film transfers included a small amount of deterioration in a few areas that resulted in minimal wow, but overall everything displayed clean stereo audio with crisp, punchy dynamics. As this premiere release of the complete score demonstrates, the artistry of Jerome Moross fills every measure of The Jayhawkers with excitement and emotion.

Set in pre-Civil War Kansas,The Jayhawkers uses the historical Jayhawkers movement (a group of guerillas fighting to keep Kansas free from slavery and on the side of the North in the coming conflict) merely as background for the complex story of two flawed protagonists. The script plays fast and loose with history, focusing instead on the deeply textured love-hate relationship between Cam Bleeker (Fess Parker) and Luke Darcy (Jeff Chandler)— both outlaws pursuing what they perceive as noble goals while leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.

This is in my opinion, one of the best western scores of all times ! Always busy awesome music ! This is so ordered... Thank you Intrada for this rousing classic !

I haven't listened to Silva Screen's Moross anthology (THE CARDINAL - The Film Music of Jerome Moross) in years, but I still recall that its rerecorded suite from THE JAYHAWKERS kicked off the set with a great start and remained a real highlight.

I didn't need to listen to it again to decide whether I want Intrada's full release. I want it -- and I have ordered it.

Since several important Paramount scores have turned up missing (such as IN HARM'S WAY), I'm glad this one from 1959 survived accessibly. Thanks, Paramount and Intrada!

This is one of those "instant classic" CD soundtracks! I'm ordering a copy in a few days.

Intrada remains the best of the film score labels.

If someone had posted on April 1st that Intrada would be releasing the original score to "North By Northwest" and "The Jayhawkers" a month apart and in stereo (mostly), I would have laughed and given the posting a slight notice in light of it's blatant improbability.
I have had some reasonable suspicion that decent sound elements existed for NBNW since it's Blue-Ray release, but "The Jayhawkers" ? Come on...I've had this title on my Rio Bravo-Vera Cruz western film score list of things that are probably gone forever. Although I was surprised and given some hope for it when it was released as a 'bonus' track on the Kritzerland "One-Eyed Jacks" cd.
I am bowled over to see this has finally gotten a release (just picked-up my copy a few days ago...I pick-up my mail every week to 10 days) and it's really incredible. And S t e r e o on top of it! Unbelievable. To get two of my "all-time" favorite film scores released within a month of each other, and to have both in pretty damn pristine shape is amazing. Doug, Roger, and all connected with these: I can't thank you enough. Perhaps anything is possible. I'd sure like to see my "Rio Bravo" list get really small....maybe it will. Tremendous. Yeah, it's unlimited. I was a little bummed. I bought the box set as well and for collection reasons, my only complaint was that I wished each movie got it's own disc/jewel case. Then I saw this single release came out. Looks like this is the only one that's gonna get a release from the box set though. I am a bit surprised autographed copies have been available this long. What gives?
