Along with Breakfast At Tiffany’s, The Pink Panther and Charade, Hatari! is generally regarded as one of Henry Mancini’s all-time most popular film score recordings. In fact, Hatari! ushered in the legendary “Baby Elephant Walk,” a swaggering tune for clarinet with orchestra written for the movie that instantly became a wildly popular hit on its own. In addition to their lofty commercial success, another thing these albums had in common was in how they represented their respective scores. In each case, Mancini re-recorded roughly a half hour of music, adapting the major themes and easy listening-style music into albums accessible to wide audiences. The actual film soundtracks, including the more dramatic underscoring, were never made available. With this premiere release of the film soundtrack to Hatari!, Intrada presents to new audiences the complete score as Mancini actually recorded it for the film, including the original version of “Baby Elephant Walk,” heard both in its familiar setting for the parade of elephants scene and in dramatic variations for the final chase sequence.

Hatari! was recorded on stereo three-track 35mm magnetic film in 1962, the majority of which were transferred by Paramount onto 2’’ archival tape in the 1990s. To present the complete score, restoration engineer Chris Malone has added otherwise unavailable cues from several additional sources.

John Wayne stars as Sean Mercer in this African adventure, searching the African landscape for wild animals to fill zoo orders. Mercer's group includes "the Indian" (Bruce Cabot), a womanizing sharpshooter who is gored by a rhino. While the Indian is in the hospital, a named Swiss zoo photographer Anna Maria D'Allesandro (Elsa Martinelli) shows up -- and Mercer tries to send her packing from day one. More trouble with rhinos ensue, and D'Allesandro starts collecting baby elephants along the way, giving Mercer much more than he bargained for.

HATARI is like the last, but not least, of Mancini's wonderful output and it's in stereo!
And I thought, for sure, that BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S from Paramount was immanent.
Well, perhaps it'll be coming very soon…

Hatari! is one of a couple of Mancini's re-recorded albums that I have yet to buy. This release of the original tracks is the perfect time to remedy not having this quality score. It's nice to know that the elements were treated well over the years.

The score that enabled Mancini to afford a small house in the Hollywood hills in 1963, paid something like twelve grand for it!

This is really good. Many of the ethnic instruments used in the score were supplied by Howard Hawks who brought a box full back to the USA after a trip to Africa.

Hatari! was always my all-time favorite Mancini score. Unbelievable releases!!

Bring on Breakfast At Tiffany's, Experiment in Terror, The Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, The Great Race, Gunn, Two for the Road... etc...

OMG! I was actually thinking of buying the re-recording of this soundtrack, and now Intrada's relased the complete score! You guys are friggin' mind-readers!

I'm so glad that we're finally getting to hear different facets of Mancini's oeuvre. This and Charade are huge achievements. I can't wait…

I hope the musicians are credited on the back inlay... Percussionist Shelley Manne is in there somewhere I'm sure. Looking forward to hearing Mancini's African Safari in all it's glory. On the RCA LP my favorite track has always been The Sounds Of Hatari, always wished the LP carried more of that vibe. As for Baby Elephant Walk, the nuns in catholic gradeschool were borderline anal on that tune when it came to playing musical chairs.

To those who may not be aware, Shelley Manne's Daktari is another exceptional recording with lots of Hollywood tribal beats.

I agree about DAKTARI. It seems like a HATARI for chamber group--jazz group that is, nicely augmented by sundry exotic percussion. It's well worth seeking out on CD (although it may be OOP by now.)
